Tiffany Cromwell's Cycling Journey
How Tiffany Started Cycling
Tiffany Cromwell began her cycling career in 2002. She was discovered through a special program in South Australia that looks for talented athletes. Before cycling, Tiffany tried many other sports. She did ballet, running, triathlons, and even basketball. She really wanted to play basketball professionally, but she felt her height was a challenge.
At first, Tiffany didn't really like cycling. She said she was "Tiny and one of the worst" in her group on the track. But everything changed when she entered her first road race. She finished third in the state championships, and that's when she fell in love with the sport!
Early International Wins
Tiffany quickly showed her talent. She earned several podium finishes in junior Oceania Games. One of her first big international wins happened in 2008. This was at the Sea Otter Classic in California. She made a solo attack, meaning she rode ahead of everyone else by herself. She won again the next year, also with a solo effort.
Tiffany's Professional Road Cycling Career
In 2010, Tiffany joined her first European team, Lotto Ladies Team. After some challenges, she moved to the Hitec Products UCK team in 2011.
Major Victories and Achievements
A big step in her career came in 2012 when she joined the Australian team GreenEDGE–AIS. Here, she achieved some of her most important wins.
- Winning a Stage in the Giro d'Italia: One of her most memorable wins was in Stage 5 of the 2012 Giro d'Italia Femminile. Tiffany attacked with over 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) left to go. She finished the stage with a huge lead, almost nine minutes ahead of her rivals! For a short time, she was even close to wearing the race leader's jersey.
- First Spring Classics Win: In 2013, Tiffany won her first major one-day race, the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. She won in a sprint against another strong rider, Megan Guarnier. This was a big victory in the spring classics, which are famous and tough races.
In 2014, Tiffany joined Specialized–lululemon. She earned several top-three finishes in stages of the Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche. She also represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games. She just missed out on a bronze medal in the road race. The next year, she finished third in a stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia Femminile.
After her team Velocio–SRAM stopped at the end of 2015, Tiffany joined Canyon–SRAM for the 2016 season. She continued to perform well, finishing third at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and winning Stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia Femminile. In 2017, she won Stage 1 of the Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen.
In 2018, Tiffany was chosen again to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games. As the road captain, she helped her teammate Chloe Hosking win the gold medal.
Tiffany's Olympic Debut
On May 19, 2021, it was announced that Tiffany would be part of the Australian road cycling team for the Tokyo Olympics. This was her first time competing in the Olympics! The road course was very tough and humid. Tiffany finished as the best Australian rider, placing 26th.
In October 2021, Tiffany signed a new contract with her team, Canyon-SRAM. She will continue to race both on the road and in gravel events until the end of 2023.
Tiffany's Gravel Cycling Adventures
Tiffany started exploring gravel cycling in August 2019. She and her teammate Ella Harris competed in the SBT GRVL event in Colorado. Tiffany finished second, right behind Ella.
In 2020, when Tiffany renewed her contract, it was announced she would focus on a mix of road and gravel racing. Her gravel season for 2021 was delayed due to the Olympics.
First Gravel Race Win
Tiffany's first gravel race of 2021 was her second SBT GRVL event. She rode the longer 144-mile (232 km) course and finished 8th in her group. Just six days later, she competed in the Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) in North Carolina. She finished in third place.
Tiffany's final gravel race of 2021 was the Belgian Waffle Ride in Kansas on October 31. She made an early breakaway with two other riders. Eventually, Tiffany rode solo for many miles and secured her first-ever win in gravel racing! She finished almost ten minutes ahead of the second-place rider.
Personal Life
Since February 2020, Tiffany Cromwell has been in a relationship with Finnish racing driver Valtteri Bottas.
