Tiffany Cromwell's Cycling Journey
Racing on the Road
Starting Young
Tiffany's cycling adventure began in 2002. She was discovered by a special program in South Australia that looks for sports talent. Before cycling, Tiffany tried many other sports. She did ballet, running, triathlons, and even basketball. She really wanted to be a basketball player, but she says her height was a challenge.
At first, Tiffany didn't even like cycling. She felt small and not very good compared to others. But then, something changed. She came in third in her very first road race at the state championships. That's when she realized how much she loved the sport!
Early International Wins
Tiffany quickly started winning medals in junior races. One of her first big international wins was in 2008. This happened at the Sea Otter Classic in California. She made a brave solo attack in the final laps. She won again the next year, once more by riding alone to the finish line.
Professional Road Racing
In 2010, Tiffany joined her first team based in Europe, Lotto Ladies Team. Things didn't work out perfectly, and she left the team in mid-2011. She then rode for the Hitec Products UCK team for the rest of that season.
In 2012, Tiffany joined an Australian team, GreenEDGE–AIS. This is where she achieved some of her most important victories. One big win was in Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia Femminile. She attacked with over 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) left to go! She finished the stage with a huge lead of eight and a half minutes. At one point, she was almost in the race leader's jersey.
With Orica–AIS, Tiffany also won her first major one-day race. This was the 2013 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. She won in a sprint against another rider, Megan Guarnier. This was her first victory in the famous spring classics races.
For 2014, Tiffany joined Specialized–lululemon. She earned several podium finishes in stages of the Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche. She also finished second in the mountains competition. Tiffany represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games. She just missed out on a bronze medal in the road race.
After her team Velocio–SRAM stopped at the end of 2015, Tiffany joined Canyon–SRAM for the 2016 season. She finished third at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. She also won Stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia Femminile. The next year, she won Stage 1 of the Thüringen Rundfahrt der Frauen. In 2018, Tiffany was again chosen to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games. As the team captain, she helped her teammate Chloe Hosking win the gold medal.
On May 19, 2021, it was announced that Tiffany was selected for the Tokyo Olympics. This was her first time competing in the Olympics! The road course was tough and humid. Tiffany finished as the best Australian rider in 26th place. On October 27, 2021, it was shared that Tiffany would stay with the Canyon-SRAM team for two more years. This meant she would continue her mix of road and gravel racing until the end of 2023.
Gravel Racing Adventures
Tiffany first tried gravel racing in August 2019. She and her teammate Ella Harris raced in the SBT GRVL event in Colorado. Tiffany finished second behind Ella, completing the course in five hours and six minutes.
In 2020, Tiffany signed a new contract with Canyon–SRAM. It was announced she would compete in a mixed program, including gravel races. Her gravel season was supposed to start in June 2021. However, because she was chosen for the Tokyo Olympics, it was moved to August.
To begin her four-race gravel schedule, Tiffany raced in her second SBT GRVL on August 15. She competed in the longer 232-kilometer (144-mile) black course. She finished 8th in her group, with a time of 7 hours, 32 minutes, and 45 seconds. Six days later, she raced in the Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) in Asheville, North Carolina. Tiffany completed the 164-kilometer (102-mile) "waffle" course in 5 hours, 30 minutes, and 42 seconds. She earned a third-place finish.
Tiffany's third gravel race of 2021 was planned for October in Marrakesh. But it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her final gravel race of 2021 was on October 31. This was the 178.8-kilometer (111.11-mile) Belgian Waffle Ride in Lawrence, Kansas. In this race, Tiffany, Flávia Oliveira, and Hannah Shell broke away early. Shell was dropped, and Oliveira made a solo attack. But Tiffany soon caught up to Oliveira and passed her! She rode alone for the rest of the race. Tiffany secured her first win in gravel racing by almost ten minutes.
In April 2025, Tiffany Cromwell won the Australian National Gravel Championship. This race was held at Mt Crawford Forest in South Australia.
