- 1091 – In the Battle of Levounion, the Pechenegs were defeated by Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
- 1429 – The brave Joan of Arc arrived to help lift the Siege of Orléans in France.
- 1483 – The island of Gran Canaria, part of the Canary Islands, was taken over by the Kingdom of Castile.
- 1521 – During the Swedish War of Liberation, Swedish troops won a battle against Danish forces in the Battle of Västerås.

- 1760 – French forces started to attack Quebec, which was held by the British, in the siege of Quebec.
- 1770 – James Cook reached Australia at a place he named Botany Bay.
- 1781 – During the American Revolutionary War, British and French ships fought in the Battle of Fort Royal near Martinique.
- 1826 – The galaxy Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128, was discovered by James Dunlop.
- 1861 – In Maryland, lawmakers decided not to leave the Union during the American Civil War.
- 1862 – During the American Civil War, Union forces led by David Farragut took control of New Orleans.
- 1864 – The Theta Xi fraternity was started at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It was the only fraternity founded during the American Civil War.

- 1916 – In World War I, the UK's 6th Indian Division surrendered to Ottoman Forces at the Siege of Kut. This was one of the biggest surrenders of British forces at that time.

- 1945 – In World War II, the Surrender of Caserta was signed by the commander of German forces in Italy.

- 1945 – The Dachau concentration camp was freed by United States troops.
- 1946 – The International Military Tribunal for the Far East started. It charged former Japanese leaders, including Prime Minister of Japan Hideki Tojo, with serious offenses.
