Paula Strasberg (born Pearl Miller; March 8, 1909 – April 29, 1966) was an American actress who performed on stage. She was also a well-known acting coach. Paula was the second wife of famous acting teacher Lee Strasberg. She was the mother of actors John Strasberg and Susan Strasberg. She was also a close friend and acting coach to the famous movie star Marilyn Monroe.
Early Life and Acting Career
Paula Strasberg was born Pearl Miller in New York City on March 8, 1909. Her family was Jewish. She started her acting career on Broadway in 1927. Her first play was called The Cradle Song.
In 1929, she married her first husband, Harry Stein. They later divorced in 1935. Paula continued to act in many plays. She appeared in over 20 different stage roles. Her last play was Me and Molly in 1948.
Becoming an Acting Coach
Paula Strasberg became a very important person in the world of acting. She was a lifelong member of the Actors Studio. This is a famous place where actors learn and practice their craft.
In 1935, just a few days after her first marriage ended, she married Lee Strasberg. Lee Strasberg was a very influential acting teacher. Together, they had two children, Susan and John.
Paula became especially known for being the acting coach and close friend of Marilyn Monroe. She worked with Marilyn until Marilyn's death in 1962. In the 2011 movie My Week With Marilyn, an actress named Zoe Wanamaker played Paula Strasberg.
Family Life
Paula Strasberg's children also became actors. Her daughter, Susan Strasberg (1938–1999), and her son, John Strasberg (born 1941), followed in their parents' footsteps. Susan once described her mother as a very caring and supportive person.
Later Years and Passing
Paula Strasberg passed away on April 29, 1966, in New York City. She was 57 years old. She died from a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow. She was buried at Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. She was survived by her husband, her two children, and her younger sister.
