Irrfan Khan (born Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan; 7 January 1967 – 29 April 2020) was a very talented Indian actor. He was known for his work in Indian, British, and American movies. Many people thought he was one of the best actors in Indian cinema.
Irrfan Khan's acting career lasted over 30 years. He won many awards, including a National Film Award and six Filmfare Awards. In 2011, he received the Padma Shri, which is India's fourth highest award for civilians. After he passed away in 2021, he was given the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
He started his film journey with a small part in Salaam Bombay! (1988). He later became famous for his roles in movies like The Warrior (2001), Haasil (2003), and Maqbool (2004). He also starred in popular Hollywood films such as The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Life of Pi (2012), and Jurassic World (2015). His last movie was Angrezi Medium (2020).

Early Life and Education
Growing Up in Rajasthan
Irrfan Khan was born on 7 January 1967 in Tonk, Rajasthan, India. His family was Muslim. His mother, Saeeda Begum Khan, was from Tonk. His father, Yaseen Ali Khan, was from a village called Khajuriya in Rajasthan. His parents ran a business that sold tires.
Irrfan spent his childhood in Tonk and then in Jaipur. He was very good at cricket. He was even chosen to play in a special tournament for young players called the CK Nayudu Trophy. This tournament was a step towards playing professional cricket in India. However, he could not go because he did not have enough money for travel.
Discovering Acting
Irrfan became interested in acting because of his uncle. His uncle was a theater artist in Jodhpur. In Jaipur, Irrfan met famous theater artists and performed in many plays. He finished his master's degree in Jaipur.
In 1984, he joined the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. This is a very famous school for acting. He went there to study how to become an actor.
Acting Career
Starting Out (1987–2008)
After finishing his studies at NSD in 1987, Irrfan Khan got his first movie role. It was a small part in Mira Nair's film Salaam Bombay!. However, many of his scenes were cut from the final movie.
He also acted in many television shows during the 1990s. He played different kinds of characters, from a psycho killer to a famous poet. Some of his TV shows included Chanakya and Chandrakanta.
In 2001, he starred in the British film The Warrior. This movie was filmed in just 11 weeks in India. It was shown at many international film festivals. This role helped him get noticed.
He then played the main role in Maqbool (2004). This movie was based on Shakespeare's famous play Macbeth. His first main role in a Bollywood film was in Rog (2005). Critics praised his acting, saying his eyes showed a lot of emotion. He also won the Filmfare Best Villain Award in 2004 for his role in Haasil.
In 2007, he appeared in two successful movies: The Namesake and Life in a... Metro. For Life in a... Metro, he won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. He also acted in international films like A Mighty Heart and The Darjeeling Limited.
International Success (2008–2020)
Irrfan Khan became even more famous around the world. In 2008, he played a police inspector in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. This film won many awards, and Irrfan and the other actors won a special award for their performance as a team. The director, Danny Boyle, said Irrfan had a special way of understanding his characters.
In 2012, he acted in the Hollywood movie The Amazing Spider-Man. He also played the older version of the main character, Pi, in Ang Lee's movie Life of Pi. This movie was a huge success around the world.
His role in Paan Singh Tomar (2012) was very important. He played a real-life athlete who became a bandit. For this role, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. In 2013, he starred in The Lunchbox, which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2015, Irrfan Khan acted alongside Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in the movie Piku. He also had a big role in the Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World. Later, he appeared with Tom Hanks in the 2016 movie Inferno.
His movie Hindi Medium (2017) was very popular and successful. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role in this film. His last movie was Angrezi Medium, which came out in 2020.
Other Work
In 2015, Irrfan Khan became the face of "Resurgent Rajasthan." This was a campaign by the government of Rajasthan to promote the state. He also used his voice for a light and sound show at a war memorial in Jaipur. The show honored the brave soldiers of Rajasthan.
Personal Life
On 23 February 1995, Irrfan Khan married Sutapa Sikdar. She was a writer and also studied at the National School of Drama. They had two sons named Babil and Ayan.
In 2012, he changed the spelling of his first name from "Irfan" to "Irrfan." He said he liked how the extra "r" sounded. Later, he dropped "Khan" from his name. He explained that he wanted his acting work, not his family name, to be what defined him.
Death
In March 2018, Irrfan Khan shared on social media that he had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called neuroendocrine cancer. He went to the UK for treatment and came back to India in February 2019.
On 28 April 2020, he was taken to a hospital in Mumbai. He was getting treatment for a colon infection caused by his illness. He passed away the next day, on 29 April 2020, at 53 years old. His mother had passed away just four days before him.
Many actors, writers, and famous people around the world shared their sadness and paid tribute to him. Irrfan Khan was buried in the Versova Kabristan in Mumbai. His sons performed his last rites.
