Shukri Ghanem facts for kids
Shukri Mohammed Ghanem (9 October 1942 – 29 April 2012) was an important politician from Libya. He served as the Prime Minister of Libya from June 2003 to March 2006. After that, he became the Minister of Oil until 2011.
During the Libyan Civil War in 2011, Shukri Ghanem left the government. His body was sadly found in a river in Vienna, Austria, on 29 April 2012.

Early Life and Learning
Shukri Ghanem was born in Tripoli, Libya, on 9 October 1942. When he was young, Libya was under Italian rule.
He went to Garyounis University in Benghazi, where he studied economics and finished his degree in 1963. Later, he earned a special advanced degree (a PhD) in international economics from Tufts University in 1975.
What Did Shukri Ghanem Do?
Shukri Ghanem had many important jobs throughout his career. He worked for OPEC, which is an organization of countries that produce oil. He was in charge of their research team.
He also worked in Libya's government. He was a director in the Ministry of Economy and later helped manage Libya's oil sales at the National Oil Corporation (NOC). He was also a chief advisor at the Ministry of Petroleum.
In 2003, he became the Prime Minister of Libya. This means he was the head of the government. In 2006, he was appointed Chairman of Libya's NOC, which manages all the country's oil. He left this job in 2009.
After leaving Libya in 2011, he worked as a consultant for a company in Vienna, Austria, until he passed away.
Libya's Return to the World Stage
For many years, Libya faced problems with other countries. This was because of a bombing incident in 1988 involving a plane called Pan Am Flight 103, known as the Lockerbie bombing. Many countries placed restrictions on Libya.
When Shukri Ghanem became Prime Minister, he helped Libya improve its relationships with other nations. He was a key person in this effort. Libya agreed to pay money to the families of the people who died in the bombing. They also agreed to stop developing certain types of weapons.
In 2004, Shukri Ghanem made some comments that caused a stir. He suggested that Libya paid compensation to "buy peace" and not because they fully accepted guilt for the bombing. These comments were later changed by Libya's leader at the time, Muammar Gaddafi.
During the Libyan Civil War
In May 2011, during the 2011 Libyan Civil War, it was reported that Shukri Ghanem had left the Gaddafi government. Officials in Tunisia later confirmed this. He went to Rome and then to Vienna.
On 1 June 2011, Shukri Ghanem confirmed that he had decided to support the groups opposing the government.
Family Life
Shukri Ghanem was married. He had three daughters and one son.
How Did Shukri Ghanem Die?
Shukri Ghanem was living with his family in Vienna, Austria. He had an apartment there, and his daughters also lived in the city.
On 29 April 2012, Shukri Ghanem's body was found in a part of the River Danube in Vienna. He was 69 years old. Police investigated his death, and his body was later returned to Tripoli, Libya, for burial.
