Events
American Civil War: Lee's Invasion of Maryland
In 1862, the American Civil War was still raging. This was a big fight between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy). On September 5, a major event happened. General Robert E. Lee, a famous leader of the Confederate army, led about 55,000 of his soldiers from Virginia into the state of Maryland.
This was the first time the Confederate army tried to invade the North. They crossed the Potomac River near a place called White's Ford. This move was a big deal because it brought the war directly into Union territory.
