William Babington

William Babington (born May 21, 1756 – died April 29, 1833) was an important Anglo-Irish doctor and expert in minerals. He was a member of the Royal Society and a founder of the Geological Society of London.

William Babington's Early Life and Career

William Babington was born in Portglenone, a town near Coleraine in Ireland. His father was Reverend Humphrey Babington.

William started his medical training by working with a doctor in Londonderry. Later, he continued his studies at Guy's Hospital in London. In 1777, he became an assistant surgeon at Haslar Naval Hospital, where he worked for four years.

After that, he got a job as an apothecary (a type of pharmacist who also prepared medicines) at Guy's Hospital. He also taught chemistry to medical students there.

Becoming a Doctor at Guy's Hospital

William Babington earned his medical degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1795. The next year, he joined Dr. William Saunders as an assistant doctor at Guy's Hospital. By 1802, he became the head physician at the hospital, taking over from Dr. Saunders. He worked as a physician at Guy's Hospital from 1795 to 1811.

Contributions to Science

William Babington was very interested in geology and minerals. He helped start the Geological Society of London, which is a group for people who study rocks and the Earth. He was even the president of this society from 1822 to 1824. In 1805, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society, a famous group of scientists.

He managed a huge collection of minerals for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. When the Earl died in 1792, Babington bought the entire collection himself. A special mineral called Babingtonite was named after him because of his important work with minerals.

Family and Legacy

William Babington married Martha Elizabeth, and they had four sons and four daughters. He passed away on April 29, 1833, and was buried in London.

One of his sons, Benjamin Guy Babington, also became a doctor at Guy's Hospital. His daughter, Martha, married another famous doctor named Richard Bright.

Today, you can see a statue of William Babington in St Paul's Cathedral in London. This statue was created by an artist named William Behnes.
