Georg Brandt (born June 26, 1694 – died April 29, 1768) was a smart Swedish chemist and mineralogist. He is famous for discovering the element cobalt around 1735. This was a big deal because he was the first person to find a metal that people in ancient times didn't know about. He also helped show that some people claiming to be alchemists (who tried to turn cheap metals into gold) were actually tricking others.

Georg Brandt's Life Story

Georg Brandt was born in a place called Riddarhyttan in Sweden. His father, Jurgen Brandt, owned a mine and was also a pharmacist. His mother was Katarina Ysing. Georg grew up to become a professor of chemistry at Uppsala University, which is a famous school in Sweden.

He made a very important discovery about the color blue. Before Brandt, people thought that the blue color in glass came from a metal called bismuth. But Brandt showed that it was actually cobalt that made glass turn blue. Cobalt was often found together with bismuth in the same ores (rocks from which metals are taken).

Georg Brandt passed away in Stockholm on April 29, 1768. He was 73 years old.

Discovering Cobalt: A New Metal

Georg Brandt's biggest achievement was finding cobalt. This was a new chemical element that no one had identified as a separate metal before. He spent a lot of time studying different minerals and their properties.

Around 1741, he wrote about his discoveries. He explained that just like there were six known metals, he had found six "half-metals." These included Mercury, Bismuth, Zinc, Antimony, Arsenic, and his new discovery, Cobalt.

Brandt was very careful in his work. He found several ways to tell the difference between bismuth and cobalt. These two elements were often found mixed together in the same rocks. His detailed experiments helped other scientists understand these elements better.

Legacy and Impact

Georg Brandt's work was very important for the field of chemistry. By discovering cobalt, he expanded our understanding of the elements that make up our world. His careful methods helped set a standard for how scientists should study and identify new materials.

His discovery of cobalt also had a practical impact. Cobalt is still used today to create beautiful blue colors in glass, ceramics, and paints. It's also used in many other modern technologies, like batteries and special alloys.
