Phillip Roger Noyce is an Australian film and TV director. He was born on April 29, 1950. Since 1977, he has directed many feature films. These include different types of movies like historical dramas, thrillers, and action films.
Some of his famous films are Rabbit-Proof Fence, Dead Calm, and Salt. He also directed two movies about the character Jack Ryan: Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. In 2014, he directed The Giver, based on the popular book.
Phillip Noyce has worked with many famous actors. These include Harrison Ford, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington. He has also directed and produced TV shows in Australia and North America. His TV work includes Roots and Netflix's What/If.

Early Life and Education
Phillip Roger Noyce was born in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia. This was on April 29, 1950.
He went to high school at Barker College in Sydney. He started making short films when he was 18 years old. His first short film was called Better to Reign in Hell. He paid for it by selling roles to his friends.
He later studied at the University of Sydney. In 1973, he attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
In 1969, Noyce helped run the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op. This was a group for filmmakers. With Jan Chapman, he also ran a cinema for three years. They showed short films by directors who became famous later. These directors included Gillian Armstrong and Peter Weir.
Phillip Noyce's Career in Film and TV
Noyce released his first professional film in 1975. Many of his movies are about spies. This is because his father told him stories about serving in a special commando unit during World War II.
His first major success was with the film Newsfront in 1978. This movie won several awards in Australia. It was also shown at big film festivals in London and New York.
Noyce worked on two TV miniseries in Australia. These were The Dismissal and The Cowra Breakout. Another film, Dead Calm (1988), helped him get noticed in Hollywood. This movie also helped start Nicole Kidman's career. After Dead Calm, Noyce went to the US to direct Blind Fury.
In 1991, Noyce moved to the US with his family. He directed five films over the next eight years. Clear and Present Danger, starring Harrison Ford, was very successful. It earned over $216 million.
After directing The Bone Collector in 1999, Noyce returned to Australia. He directed Rabbit-Proof Fence. This film tells the story of the Stolen Generations. It won the Best Film award in Australia in 2002. Noyce said this film was his proudest moment. He felt it showed the truth of the Stolen Generations' experiences.
Noyce also received praise for The Quiet American (2002). This film was based on a novel by Graham Greene. It earned Michael Caine an Academy Award nomination. Noyce won best director awards for this film.
In 2010, he directed Salt, starring Angelina Jolie. This became his biggest commercial hit. It made almost $300 million worldwide.
Since 2011, Noyce has directed many TV pilots. These include the pilot for the series Revenge. He also directed for Netflix's What/If and FOX Network's The Resident.
His film Above Suspicion was released in 2021. The Desperate Hour, starring Naomi Watts, came out in 2022. In late 2021, a special showing of his films was held in Paris.
Noyce's most recent film is Fast Charlie, released in December 2023. It stars Pierce Brosnan and received very good reviews.

As of 2024, Phillip Noyce is an ambassador for the SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3). This is a film festival held every year in Sydney.
In January 2023, Noyce was given a special honour by the Australian Government. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). This is a high award for his contributions.
He has won many awards throughout his career.
