Jean Rochefort (born Jean Raoul Robert Rochefort; April 29, 1930 – October 9, 2017) was a famous French actor. He won many awards during his long career, including a special award called an Honorary César in 1999. He was known for his unique acting style and his famous moustache!

Life and Career

Jean Rochefort was born in Paris, France, on April 29, 1930. His parents were from a region in France called Brittany. He went to school at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen.

When Jean was 19, he started studying acting at the Centre d'Art Dramatique de la rue Blanche. Later, he joined the Conservatoire National, which is a very famous acting school in France. After finishing his national service in 1953, he worked as a theater actor for seven years. People noticed that he was good at both serious (drama) and funny (comedy) roles. Soon, he started acting in television shows and movies. He also directed some projects.

After playing smaller roles in movies like Cartouche and Marvelous Angelique, Jean Rochefort got his first big role in the 1972 drama Hearth Fires. In this movie, he played a father who comes back to his family after ten years. Even though he was only 41, he played a character with grown-up children. To look older for this role, he grew a moustache. This moustache became his special look and he kept it for most of his career! He only shaved it once for the 1996 movie Ridicule.

A few years later, he starred in the comedy An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive. This movie was very popular and made Jean Rochefort even more famous. He also played a funny spy chief named Louis Toulouse in the comedy Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire in 1972, and its sequel in 1974. In 1998, he acted alongside Gerard Depardieu in the TV mini-series Le Comte de Monte Cristo.

While filming Cartouche in his thirties, Jean discovered a new passion: horses! He loved equestrianism (horse riding) and became a horse breeder. He even owned a horse farm called Le Haras de Villequoy. Because of his love for horses, he became a horse expert for French television in 2004.

Jean Rochefort won two important awards called César Awards. In 1976, he won for Best Supporting Actor in Que la fête commence. In 1978, he won Best Actor for Le Crabe-tambour.

Jean Rochefort was chosen to play the main role of Don Quixote in the movie The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, directed by Terry Gilliam. He even learned English just for the part! However, due to some health issues and other problems with the movie's production, filming had to be stopped. A documentary called Lost in La Mancha was made about this movie that never got finished.

Jean Rochefort had five children. He had two children, Marie and Julien, with his first wife, Alexandra Moscwa. He also had a son named Pierre with actress Nicole Garcia. With his second wife, Françoise Vidal, he had two daughters, Louise and Clémence.
