Robert Charles Bryan (born April 29, 1978) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Many people think he is one of the best doubles tennis players ever. He was ranked the world No. 1 in men's doubles for 438 weeks. This is the second-longest time anyone has held that spot! He also finished as the top-ranked player at the end of the year eight times.

Bryan won 126 doubles titles in the ATP Tour. This includes 23 major titles: 16 in men's doubles and seven in mixed doubles. He played with his twin brother Mike. Together, the Bryan brothers were one of the most successful doubles teams in tennis history. They were even named the ATP Team of the Decade for the 2000s. They were the second men's doubles team to win a career Golden Slam. This means they won all four major tournaments and an Olympic gold medal. They achieved this at the 2012 London Olympics. The Bryan brothers stopped playing tennis professionally in August 2020.

Bob Bryan's Tennis Journey

Amazing Doubles Records

Bob Bryan and his brother Mike set many records in doubles tennis.

  • They won 16 Grand Slam titles.
  • They reached 30 Grand Slam men's doubles finals.
  • They were named ITF World Champions 10 times.
  • They won 116 ATP titles and played in 169 ATP finals.
  • They were ranked No. 1 for 439 weeks.
  • They won over 1000 team matches.
  • They won at least one Grand Slam for 10 years in a row.
  • Fans voted them the ATP Fans' Favorite Doubles Team 11 times.
  • They achieved the "Bryan Golden Slam." This means they held all Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal at the same time.
  • They reached 7 Grand Slam finals in a row from 2005 to 2006.
  • They won 39 Masters 1000 titles.
  • They completed the "Career Golden Masters." This means they won all nine Masters 1000 events. Only one other player, Daniel Nestor, has done this.

Early Career and College Days

Bob Bryan was a top junior player. In 1998, he was the No. 1 singles player in the nation. He won the clay court nationals and reached the finals of Kalamazoo. He and Mike won the Kalamazoo doubles title twice, in 1995 and 1996. They also won the US Open Junior doubles title in 1996.

He played tennis for Stanford University in 1997 and 1998. He helped the Cardinal team win two NCAA team championships in a row. In 1998, he won the "Triple Crown." This means he won the NCAA singles, doubles (with Mike), and team titles all in one year. He was the first man to do this since Alex O'Brien in 1992.

Professional Tennis Career

With his twin brother Mike, Bob Bryan won 116 doubles titles. This includes 16 Grand Slam titles. In 2005, the Bryan brothers reached the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. This was only the second time a men's doubles team had done this.

In 2006, they won Wimbledon and the Australian Open. This completed their Career Grand Slam. After winning the 2012 US Open, they won the first three major tournaments of 2013. This meant they held all four major titles at once! However, they did not win the 2013 US Open, so they couldn't complete a calendar year Grand Slam.

The Bryan twins were the top-ranked team at the end of the year ten times. This happened in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and then every year from 2009 to 2014.

The Bryan brothers often played for the U.S. Davis Cup team. The United States won its 32nd title at the 2007 Davis Cup.

In 2018, Bob Bryan hurt his hip during a match. He had surgery and made an amazing recovery. He was back playing with his brother less than a year later. They reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 Australian Open. They won their first title after his surgery in February 2019 at Delray Beach.

Playing for World TeamTennis

Both brothers started their World TeamTennis careers in 1999. They played for several teams over the years. They won two World TeamTennis titles. One was with the Newport Beach Breakers in 2004. The other was with the Kansas City Explorers in 2010. They joined the Vegas Rollers for the 2020 WTT season.

Personal Life

Bob Bryan married Michelle Alvarez, a lawyer, in 2010. They have three children together.

Davis Cup Achievements

Bob Bryan and his twin brother Mike have won the most Davis Cup matches for any doubles team from the United States. Bob also holds the record for playing in the Davis Cup for the U.S. for the most years (14). He also has a good record in singles matches, winning 4 out of 6.
