Marcelo Pinheiro Davi de Melo (born September 23, 1983) is a professional tennis player from Brazil. He is known for his amazing skills in doubles tennis. Marcelo was once ranked the number one doubles player in the world. He achieved this on November 2, 2015. He is the only Brazilian player to reach this top spot in ATP doubles rankings.

Marcelo has won two major Grand Slam titles in doubles. He won the French Open in 2015 with his partner Ivan Dodig. Then, he won the Wimbledon Championships in 2017 with Łukasz Kubot. He was the first Brazilian man to win a Grand Slam doubles title. Marcelo has won 39 doubles titles on the ATP Tour. This includes nine big titles at the Masters 1000 level. He also reached the finals at Wimbledon in 2013 and the US Open in 2018 for men's doubles. He also made it to the mixed doubles final at the French Open in 2009. Marcelo was also a runner-up in doubles at the ATP Finals in 2014 and 2017.

He has played for Brazil in the Davis Cup since 2008. He often played doubles with André Sá or Bruno Soares. Marcelo has also competed in three Summer Olympic Games.

Early Career and Rise

Marcelo Melo started his career playing doubles with different Brazilian partners. In 2007, he had a very good year. He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in doubles. He also made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open. In 2007, he won his first tournament title at the ATP 250 Estoril.

In 2008, Marcelo teamed up with André Sá. They won three ATP tournaments together. These were in Costa do Sauípe, Poertschach, and New Haven. They even played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In 2009, Melo and Sá won another ATP title. Marcelo also reached the final of the Mixed Doubles at Roland Garros with American player Vania King. This was a big achievement for a Brazilian player. Later that year, Marcelo started a new partnership with Bruno Soares.

Grand Slam Wins and World No. 1

In 2010, Melo and Soares reached a final in Auckland. They also beat the famous Bryan brothers at Roland Garros. This helped them reach the quarterfinals there.

In 2011, Melo and Soares won two titles in Chile and Brazil. They also reached several other finals and semifinals. At the end of 2011, Marcelo and Bruno Soares decided to end their partnership.

In 2012, Marcelo teamed up with Ivan Dodig. They reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Marcelo also played in the 2012 Summer Olympics with Bruno Soares. They made it to the quarterfinals. By the end of 2012, Marcelo reached his best ranking yet, at world No. 17.

The year 2013 was a huge one for Marcelo. He won the ATP 250 Brisbane title. At the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, he reached the final, which was his best performance there. This helped him reach world No. 14. At the US Open, he reached the semifinals for the first time. He then won his first Masters 1000 title in October. He and Dodig won the Shanghai Masters, beating Roger Federer and the Bryan brothers. This made Marcelo a world top 10 player for the first time. He even reached the world doubles top 5.

In 2014, Marcelo continued to play well. He reached the US Open semifinals and the ATP World Finals. He also made it to the finals of two Masters 1000 events.

In 2015, Marcelo had an amazing year. He reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. He won the Acapulco tournament. In June, he won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros with Ivan Dodig. They beat the Bryan brothers in the final. In October, Marcelo won three tournaments in a row. He won in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters. In Vienna, he won with Łukasz Kubot. This win made him the number one player in the ATP doubles ranking!

Continued Success

Marcelo stayed at world No. 1 for 22 weeks in 2016. He and Ivan Dodig won two Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. In October, Marcelo and Łukasz Kubot won the Vienna Open doubles title.

In 2017, Marcelo and Łukasz Kubot had a fantastic year. They reached the doubles final at Indian Wells Masters. They then won their first Masters 1000 title together at the 2017 Miami Open. They also won the Madrid Open. At Wimbledon, they won the men's doubles title. This was Marcelo's second Grand Slam title. They won a very long final that lasted almost 4 hours and 39 minutes. In November, Marcelo became world No. 1 again after winning the Paris Masters with Kubot.

In 2018, Marcelo remained world No. 1 until April. He won the Shanghai Masters 1000 title for the third time. He also reached the final of the US Open, which was his best result there.

In 2019, Marcelo and Kubot continued to reach many finals and semifinals. They were runners-up at the Indian Wells and Shanghai Masters 1000. They also won the 2019 Winston-Salem Open title in August. They qualified for the ATP Finals and reached the semifinals.

In 2020, Marcelo and Łukasz Kubot won two more ATP titles. They won the 2020 Abierto Mexicano Telcel and the 2020 Erste Bank Open. They also reached another final in Germany. They qualified for the 2020 ATP Finals again.

Recent Years

In 2021, Marcelo played with new partners like Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer. Later that year, he reunited with Łukasz Kubot at Roland Garros.

In 2022, Marcelo reached his 70th ATP final. He won his 10th ATP 500 title at the 2022 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships with Mackenzie McDonald. This was his 36th overall title.

In 2023, Marcelo was a runner-up at the ATP 500 in Rio. He also won the ATP 500 in Halle for the third time. He reached 600 career wins at the 2023 French Open. At the 2023 Atlanta Open, he played his 1000th tour-level match. He is the only active player to reach this milestone.

In 2024, Marcelo reached his first Masters final in five years at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters with Alexander Zverev. He also won the ATP 250 Stuttgart and was a runner-up at the Washington Open with Rafael Matos.

In February 2025, Marcelo won his 39th title at his home tournament, the 2025 Rio Open, with Rafael Matos. At 41 years old, he became the oldest champion in the event's history.

Off the Court

Marcelo Melo's best friend on the tennis tour is Alexander Zverev. They first met at a tournament in 2015. Marcelo's older brother, Daniel, was also a tennis player. He retired from the sport in 2006.
