Erik Martin Axenrot (born March 5, 1979) is a talented Swedish drummer. He is best known by his nickname, Axe. He played drums for the famous progressive metal band Opeth for many years. He was with them from 2005 to 2021. Since 2004, he has also been the drummer for the band Bloodbath.

Martin Axenrot is known for his amazing and detailed drumming style. Other musicians, especially those from Opeth, have praised his skills. Mikael Åkerfeldt, Opeth's leader, said it was "a joy to play with" him. Fans and band members sometimes jokingly call him "Legolas." This is a character from The Lord of the Rings books.

Mikael Åkerfeldt once shared that Axenrot finished all his drum parts for Opeth's album Watershed very quickly. He completed eleven songs in just seven days! Nathalie Lorichs, who sang on the song "Coil" from that album, is Martin Axenrot's girlfriend.

Axe's Musical Journey

Martin Axenrot started his music career early. One of his first bands was Triumphator, formed in 1995. He played drums on their demo called "The Triumph Of Satan" in 1996. After that, he left the band.

In 1999, Axenrot joined two more bands: Witchery and Nifelheim. He continued to build his experience as a drummer.

Joining Bloodbath and Opeth

In 2004, Martin Axenrot became the new drummer for Bloodbath. He took over from Dan Swanö, who then played guitar for the band. It was through Bloodbath that Axenrot met Mikael Åkerfeldt. Åkerfeldt rejoined Bloodbath in 2005. Axenrot said that Sweden is a small country, and most musicians know each other.

Later in 2005, Martin Lopez, the drummer for Opeth, had to leave the band temporarily. He was dealing with some health issues. Opeth needed a temporary drummer. Patrik Jensen suggested Axenrot, who was his bandmate in Witchery. Åkerfeldt knew Axenrot from Bloodbath. Based on Jensen's suggestion, Axenrot started playing with Opeth for five tours.

On May 12, 2006, Martin Axenrot officially joined Opeth. Martin Lopez decided not to return to the band. Axenrot stayed with Opeth for 16 years. In November 2021, it was announced that he had left Opeth. This was due to "conflict of interests," meaning they had different ideas about things. Sami Karppinen then filled in for Opeth's North American tour.

In 2010, Axenrot played with Opeth's bassist, Martin Mendez. They performed with the famous musician Jon Lord and an orchestra. This special concert took place in Nidarosdomen in Trondheim, Norway.
