Cansignorio della Scala (born March 5, 1340 – died October 19, 1375) was a powerful ruler. He was the Lord of Verona from 1359 until 1375. At first, he shared this role with his brother, Paolo Alboino della Scala.

Becoming Lord of Verona

Cansignorio became Lord of Verona after his father, Mastino II della Scala, passed away. He shared the rule with his brothers, Cangrande II della Scala and Paolo Alboino. However, Cangrande II was the main ruler at that time.

Cansignorio wanted to take full control of Verona. In 1359, he managed to remove Cangrande II from power. With help from the Carraresi family of Padua, Cansignorio became the sole ruler of Verona.

Cansignorio's Rule and Legacy

Cansignorio ruled Verona for many years. Before he passed away in 1375, he made sure his sons would become the next rulers. His brother Paolo Alboino, who had been in prison since 1365, was prevented from taking power. This cleared the way for Cansignorio's sons, Bartolomeo II della Scala and Antonio I della Scala, to succeed him.

Despite some harsh actions, Cansignorio was a fair ruler for Verona. He also made the city richer and more beautiful. He ordered the building of many important structures.

Building Projects in Verona

Cansignorio was known for his building projects. He built the first stone bridge over the Adige River since the ancient Ponte Pietra (Verona). This new bridge helped people travel and trade.

He also built the first watchtower in Italy, called the Gardello. This tower helped protect the city and was a symbol of its strength.

Cansignorio's Tomb

Cansignorio's final resting place is very famous. His tomb is part of the notable Scaliger tombs in Verona. These tombs are beautiful examples of Gothic architecture. They are located in the courtyard of Santa Maria Antica church.

Family Life

Cansignorio married Agnes of Durazzo. She was the second daughter of Charles, Duke of Durazzo. Agnes was also the sister of Margherita of Durazzo, who later became a queen.

Cansignorio and Agnes did not have any children together. However, Cansignorio had three children from other relationships. His daughter, Lucia della Scala, married into important families. His sons, Bartolomeo II della Scala and Antonio I della Scala, later became the Lords of Verona.
