The Adige river is the second longest river in Italy. It starts high up in the Alps mountains. This is near the borders of Italy with Austria and Switzerland. The river then flows through a large part of Northeast Italy. Finally, it empties into the Adriatic Sea.
The Adige is also the third largest Italian river by the area of land it drains. This area is called its watershed. It is also the fourth largest by how much water flows through it each year.

Discover the Adige River
The Adige river is about 410 kilometers (255 miles) long. The land area that drains into the Adige is about 12,200 square kilometers (4,710 square miles).
On average, 205 cubic meters (7,239 cubic feet) of water flow through the river every second. This measurement is taken near the river's mouth at Boara Pisani.
Where the Adige River Starts and Flows
The Adige river begins at the Reschen Pass in South Tyrol, Italy. This spot is about 1,550 meters (5,085 feet) high. It's very close to the borders of Austria and Switzerland.
First, the river flows south. Then, it turns east. In Merano, another river called the Passirio joins the Adige. After this, the Adige turns southeast.
In Bolzano, the Isarco river joins the Adige. The Isarco is the Adige's biggest tributary (a smaller river that flows into a larger one). The Adige then flows south again.
From Badia Polesine, the river turns east. It then flows into the Adriatic Sea. This is south of where the Brenta river enters the sea. It's also north of where the Po river enters the sea.
Valleys Along the Adige
The valley that the Adige river flows through has different names along its path:
- The Venosta valley is from the river's start to Merano.
- The Adige valley is between Merano and Trento.
- The Vallagarina valley is between Trento and Verona.
- The Padana valley is from Verona to where the river meets the sea.
