Bunker facts for kids
A bunker is a strong building, often built underground, that helps protect people or things from attacks. Think of it like a super-strong hideout! While bunkers are usually hidden below the ground, similar buildings called Blockhouses are built above ground.
Bunkers were very important during big conflicts like World War I and World War II. Later, during the Cold War, many bunkers were built for important leaders and even for regular people. This was because everyone was worried about a nuclear war.

What kinds of bunkers are there?
There are several different types of bunkers, each built for a special purpose:
Trench bunkers
A trench is a long, narrow ditch dug into the ground. It can be part of a huge network of trenches. Soldiers often dig and use trenches to protect themselves. When many soldiers on the front lines use trenches, it's called trench warfare. Sometimes, bunkers are built into these trench systems for extra protection.
Pillbox bunkers
A pillbox is a small building made of strong concrete. It has small openings that people can shoot guns through. They got their name because they look a bit like the small boxes that pills used to come in.
Pillboxes were used a lot during World War I. They were often hidden using camouflage so enemies couldn't easily spot them. They could also be part of a trench system, acting as a strong firing spot that could withstand explosions. Pillboxes also helped protect important places like bridges or docks.
Industrial bunkers
Industrial bunkers are built like regular bunkers but are used for different purposes. They can be mining sites, places to store food, dumps for materials, or even places to keep important computer data. Sometimes, people even live in them!
These bunkers were built by countries during World War II to protect important factories and industries from being bombed. Many mines in France and Germany were turned into bunkers by both sides during World War I and World War II.
Famous bunkers around the world
Some bunkers are famous because of their history or their size. Many well-known bunkers were built during World War II in Germany, like Mittelwerk, La Coupole, and Éperlecques. During the Cold War, the United States built places like Cheyenne Mountain and The Greenbrier. Canada also has its own famous bunker called the Diefenbunker.
Examples of bunker systems
- The Atlantic Wall was a huge line of defenses built by Nazi Germany along the coasts of Western Europe during WWII. It included many bunkers.
- The Maginot Line was a strong line of fortifications built by France in eastern France before WWII. It also had many bunkers.
