Northeast Italy, also called Italia nord-orientale or Nord-Est in Italian, is one of five main areas in Italy. The Italian government's National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) uses these areas for official information. It's like a big section of the country.

Geography of Northeast Italy
Northeast Italy is located in the northeastern part of the country. It shares borders with several other countries and regions.
Where is Northeast Italy?
To the north, Northeast Italy borders Switzerland and Austria. To the east, it borders Slovenia. In the south, you'll find Liguria (part of Northwest Italy), Tuscany (Central Italy), Marche (Central Italy), and the small country of San Marino. To the west, it borders Lombardy (Northwest Italy) and a tiny part of Piedmont (Northwest Italy).
Coastal Areas and Mountains
Three regions in Northeast Italy have a beautiful coast along the Adriatic Sea. These are Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Veneto.
The northern part of this region is home to the mighty Alps mountains. In the south, you'll find the northern Apennines mountains. The highest point in Northeast Italy is Ortles, which is part of the Alps in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region. It stands tall at 3,905 metres (12,812 ft).
The Po River Valley
Northeast Italy includes most of the valley of the Po river. This valley is known as Pianura Padana in Italian. The Po is the longest river in Northeast Italy and also the longest river in all of Italy.
