The Province of Parma (called Provincia di Parma in Italian) is a special area in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It's like a county or district. The biggest city and capital of this province is Parma.

Exploring the Geography of Parma Province
The Province of Parma covers about 3,447 square kilometers (1,331 square miles). This area is split into three main parts from north to south.
Different Landscapes: Plains, Hills, and Mountains
- The pianura (plains) is in the north. Here, you'll find the Po River forming the northern border.
- Next are the collina (hills). These are rolling hills that lead up to the mountains.
- Finally, there are the montagna (mountains). These are part of the Apennine Mountains.
Many towns in the hilly and mountainous areas are built along the main rivers. These rivers flow from the Apennine Mountains and eventually join the Po River.
Neighboring Regions and Provinces
The Province of Parma has many neighbors. To the north, it borders the Lombardy region, including the Mantua and Cremona provinces. To the east, it's next to the Reggio Emilia province.
To the south, you'll find the Tuscany region (with the Massa-Carrara province) and the Liguria region (with the La Spezia province and the Metropolitan City of Genoa). To the west, it borders the Piacenza province.
Rivers and Lakes of Parma Province
The main rivers flowing through the province are the Taro, Parma, and Ceno.
You can also find beautiful lakes in the mountains. Two of the most important ones are:
- Santo Lake (Lago Santo parmense). This lake is about 1,507 meters (4,944 feet) high. It's the biggest natural lake in the northern Apennine Mountains.
- Ballano Lake (Lago Ballano). This lake is about 1,341 meters (4,400 feet) high. It's the second largest lake in the region.
Highest Mountains in Parma
The tallest mountains in the province include:
- Monte Sillara, which is 1,861 meters (6,106 feet) high.
- Monte Marmagna, standing at 1,852 meters (6,076 feet) high.
- Monte Orsaro, reaching 1,831 meters (6,007 feet) high.
- Monte Maggiorasca, with a height of 1,804 meters (5,919 feet).
Protected Natural Areas
The province is home to important protected areas. These include the Parco regionale delle Valli del Cedra e del Parma, also known as Parco dei Cento Laghi (Park of the Hundred Lakes). There's also the Parco nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, which is a national park. These parks help protect the natural beauty and wildlife of the region.

As of January 2017, about 448,899 people live in the Province of Parma. This means there are about 130 people living in every square kilometer.
Largest and Smallest Towns
The city of Parma is the largest town, with over 194,000 residents. Fidenza is the second largest, with about 26,826 people. The smallest town in the province is Valmozzola, with only 533 inhabitants.
