Parma mappa
Map of the province of Parma

The Province of Parma covers about 3,447 square kilometers (1,331 square miles). This area is split into three main parts from north to south.

Different Landscapes: Plains, Hills, and Mountains

  • The pianura (plains) is in the north. Here, you'll find the Po River forming the northern border.
  • Next are the collina (hills). These are rolling hills that lead up to the mountains.
  • Finally, there are the montagna (mountains). These are part of the Apennine Mountains.

Many towns in the hilly and mountainous areas are built along the main rivers. These rivers flow from the Apennine Mountains and eventually join the Po River.

Neighboring Regions and Provinces

The Province of Parma has many neighbors. To the north, it borders the Lombardy region, including the Mantua and Cremona provinces. To the east, it's next to the Reggio Emilia province.

To the south, you'll find the Tuscany region (with the Massa-Carrara province) and the Liguria region (with the La Spezia province and the Metropolitan City of Genoa). To the west, it borders the Piacenza province.
