Where is Northwest Italy?
Northwest Italy shares borders with other countries and parts of Italy. To the west, it meets France. To the north, it touches Switzerland. To the east, it borders Northeast Italy, which includes Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna.
To the south, it is close to Tuscany in Central Italy. The Ligurian Sea is also to the south and southwest.
Mountains and Rivers
The mighty Alps mountains are in the northern part of this region. The northern Apennines mountains are found in the south. The highest point in Northwest Italy, and all of Italy, is Mont Blanc. This huge mountain is in the Alps, within the Valle d'Aosta region. It sits right on the border with France and is about 4,810 meters (15,781 feet) high.
A big part of the Po River valley, called Pianura Padana in Italian, is in Northwest Italy. The Po is the longest river in Italy, flowing through many important cities and farming areas.
