Piedmont is a beautiful region in the northern part of Italy. Its name, "Piedmont," actually means "foot of the mountain" because it's surrounded by the mighty Alps mountains! The capital city of Piedmont is Turin, a very important and historic place.

Piedmont shares its borders with several other places. To the north, you'll find the country of Switzerland and the Italian region of Valle d'Aosta. To the east, it borders the regions of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. On its western side, Piedmont touches France, and to the south, it meets Liguria.

Historically, Piedmont was a significant part of the Duchy of Savoy. This duchy was a powerful state for many centuries. In 1860, during the Italian unification, the Duke of Savoy became the King of Italy. This event brought all the different parts of Italy together into one country.
