The Province of Alessandria (Italian: Provincia di Alessandria) is a special area in Italy. It is located in the southeastern part of the Piedmont region. About 425,000 people live here. The main city and capital of the province is Alessandria.
This province is quite large, covering about 3,558 square kilometers (1,374 square miles). It is the third biggest province in Piedmont. To the north, it shares a border with the province of Vercelli. To the west, it borders the Metropolitan City of Turin and the province of Asti. Its southern side touches Liguria, including the province of Savona and the Metropolitan City of Genoa. In the southeast, it meets the Province of Piacenza in Emilia-Romagna. To the east, it borders the Lombard Province of Pavia.
History of Alessandria Province
The Province of Alessandria was officially created a long time ago, on October 23, 1859. This happened because of a special law called the Legge Rattazzi. It brought together five smaller areas that were part of the Division of Alessandria. These areas included Alessandria, Acqui, Asti, Casale, and Tortona. It also added the Province of Novi. Later, in 1935, the area of Asti became its own separate province.
Local Towns and Villages
The Province of Alessandria is made up of 190 different local areas called communes. Each commune is like a town or a village with its own local government. These communes work together to form the larger province.
Amazing Places to See
One of the most famous places to visit is the Sacred Mountain of Crea. This is a special Roman Catholic site located near Alessandria. It is part of the Montferrat area, in the commune of Serralunga di Crea.
The Sacred Mountain of Crea is one of nine similar sites in Piedmont and Lombardy. These sites are so important that they are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This means they are protected for everyone to enjoy. Building of the site started in 1589. It was built around an older church dedicated to St. Mary. People believe this church was first built by Saint Eusebius of Vercelli around 350 AD.
