Marche is a beautiful region in central Italy. It's one of the 20 regions that make up the country. It sits right on the Adriatic Sea, and its main city, or capital, is Ancona.

Geography of Marche

Marche is located in the middle of Italy. To the north, it shares borders with Emilia-Romagna and the small country of San Marino. Tuscany is to its west, and Umbria is to the southwest. To the south, you'll find Abruzzo and Lazio. And to the east, it has a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea.

Marche is the 15th largest region in Italy. It covers an area of about 9,401 square kilometers (3,629 square miles).

Some of the main rivers flowing through Marche are:

  • Metauro (121 km or 75 miles long)

  • Potenza (95 km or 59 miles long)
  • Chienti (91 km or 57 miles long)

The highest mountain in the region is Monte Vettore. It's located in the Ascoli Piceno area and stands tall at 2,476 meters (8,123 feet).
