The Esino (which was called Aesis in Latin) is an important river in the Marche region of central Italy. It is one of the most important rivers in this region because of the large area of land that drains into it. This area is called its drainage basin.
There is also a smaller river with the same name in the Province of Lecco, Lombardy, but it is not as big as this one.

About the Esino River
The Esino river is about 75 kilometers (47 miles) long. The area of land that collects water for the river, its drainage basin, covers about 1,203 square kilometers (464 square miles).
Where the River Starts
The Esino river begins high up on the slopes of Monte Caffagio. This mountain is near the town of Esanatoglia in the province of Macerata. The river starts at an elevation of about 1,116 meters (3,661 feet) above sea level. This starting point is close to the border with the province of Ancona.
The River's Journey
From its source, the Esino river first flows east past Esanatoglia. Then, it turns north near the town of Matelica. After this, it crosses into the province of Ancona, close to Cerreto d'Esi.
The river continues its journey flowing north. It then makes a curve to the northeast near Genga. As it flows, the Esino passes by several towns. These include Serra San Quirico, Maiolati Spontini, Castelplanio, Castelbellino, Jesi, Chiaravalle, and Montemarciano.
Finally, the Esino river reaches the Adriatic Sea. It flows into the sea at a place called Fiumesino, near the town of Falconara Marittima.
The River's Drainage Area
Most of the Esino river's drainage basin is located in the province of Ancona. However, it also collects water from parts of the province of Macerata. A small part of its drainage area even extends into the province of Perugia in the Umbria region.
Main Rivers Joining the Esino
Several smaller rivers flow into the Esino river. These are called its tributaries. The most important ones are:
- Giano: This river is 24 kilometers (15 miles) long. It starts in the Fabriano area and joins the Esino river in a place called Borgo Tufico, which is part of Fabriano.
- Sentino: This river begins its journey in the Umbria region.
- Esinante.
