History of Rimini Province
The Province of Rimini was created in 1992. It was made from parts of another area called Forlì, which then changed its name to the province of Forlì-Cesena.
Changes to the Province Map
In 2006, people voted in a special election called a referendum. They decided to move seven towns from the Province of Pesaro and Urbino (in the Marche region) to the Province of Rimini. These towns were Casteldelci, Maiolo, Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant'Agata Feltria, and Talamello. This change officially happened on August 15, 2009.
Geography of Rimini Province
The Province of Rimini covers an area of 864.88 square kilometers (about 334 square miles). It is the smallest province in the Emilia-Romagna region. The land here is divided into four main types of areas.
Different Land Areas
- The northwestern part is the end of the Padan Plain, also known as the Po Valley.
- There is a thin strip of land right along the Adriatic Sea. This is where the capital city, Rimini, is located.
- Most of the western and southern parts of the province have small hills.
- In the very southwest, you can find the Apennines mountain range.
Neighboring Regions and Sea
The province shares borders with several places. To the north, it borders the Forlì-Cesena province. To the south, it borders the Marche region (specifically the Pesaro and Urbino province) and the small country of Republic of San Marino. To the west, it borders the Tuscany region (the Arezzo province). To the east, it meets the Adriatic Sea.
