About the Marecchia River
The Marecchia river is about 70 km (43 mi) long. Its drainage basin (the area of land where water flows into the river) is about 500 km2 (193 sq mi).
The amount of water flowing in the river, called its discharge, changes with the season. In autumn, it can be very high, up to 1,200 m3/s (42,000 cu ft/s). But in summer, it becomes very low. Most of the time, the river's flow is around 11 m3/s (390 cu ft/s).
Where the River Starts and Flows
The Marecchia river flows through a valley called Valmarecchia. It starts in the Alpe della Luna mountains, near the town of Badia Tedalda in Tuscany. The river begins at an elevation of about 1,454 m (4,770.3 ft) above sea level.
After a short distance, the river enters the Emilia-Romagna region, flowing into the Casteldelci area in the Province of Rimini. Along its journey, other smaller rivers join the Marecchia.
- The Senatello river joins from the left side.
- The Massa river joins from the right side.
- The San Marino river also joins from the right.
- Later, the Ausa river flows into the Marecchia from the right.
Finally, the Marecchia river reaches the Adriatic Sea in Rimini, between the areas of Rivabella and San Giuliano.
The Ancient Bridge of Tiberius
One famous landmark along the Marecchia river in Rimini is the Bridge of Tiberius (Italian: Ponte di Tiberio). It is also known as the Bridge of Augustus (Latin: Pons Augustus). This Roman bridge is very old! Its construction started when Augustus was emperor. It was finished in 20 AD during the time of Emperor Tiberius.
