Suppo I: A Powerful Nobleman
Suppo I was a very influential person in the Frankish kingdom during the early 9th century. He was known for his loyalty and for helping the emperor.
Suppo's Early Career and Roles
In the year 817, Suppo was given control over several important cities. He became the Count of Brescia, Parma, Piacenza, Modena, and Bergamo. These were all key areas in the Kingdom of Italy.
He also served as a missus dominicus. This was a special messenger or representative for the emperor. Suppo worked with Bishop Ratald of Brescia to make sure the emperor's rules were followed in Italy.
Helping the Emperor
In 818, a big event happened. A man named Bernard started a rebellion against Emperor Louis the Pious. Suppo I played a crucial role in stopping this uprising. His help was very important to the emperor.
Because of his loyalty and success, Emperor Louis the Pious rewarded Suppo. In 822, the Duke of Spoleto, Winigis, stepped down and later died. The emperor then made Suppo the new Duke of Spoleto. This was a very high position.
When Suppo became Duke of Spoleto, he gave control of Brescia to his son, Mauring.
Suppo's Family and Legacy
Suppo I likely had a wife from the Lombard people. We know this because his second son was named Adelchis. Naming children after Lombard traditions suggests a connection to that group.
The historian Einhard recorded Suppo's death in 824. After Suppo passed away, the Duchy of Spoleto went to Adelard. However, Adelard died just five months later. The duchy then passed to Suppo's son, Mauring.
