What Happened to Flight 911?

Flight 911 was a Boeing 707 jet, a large plane used for long flights. It was operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation, which was a big airline from the United Kingdom. The flight started its journey in San Francisco, USA. Its final destination was Hong Kong. Along the way, it was scheduled to make several stops. These stops included Honolulu in Hawaii, Fukuoka in Japan, and then Tokyo, also in Japan.

The Day of the Crash

On March 5, 1966, the plane was flying near Mount Fuji. This is a very famous and tall mountain in Japan. Suddenly, the aircraft broke apart while it was still in the air. Pieces of the plane fell to the ground. The crash happened very quickly and tragically.

Why the Plane Crashed

Investigators looked closely at what caused the accident. They found that the crash was due to a problem with the plane's vertical stabiliser. This is a fin-like part on the tail of the plane. It helps the plane stay stable and fly straight. The problem was caused by faulty maintenance. This means that the plane had not been checked or fixed properly. Because of this, the vertical stabiliser failed during the flight. This made the plane impossible to control, leading to it breaking up.

Who Was On Board?

There were 113 passengers and 11 crew members on Flight 911. A crew member is someone who works on the plane, like pilots and flight attendants. Sadly, everyone on board died in the accident. People from many different countries were on the flight. This included many people from the United States and Japan.
