Patrick John Miguel van Aanholt is a Dutch professional footballer. He was born on August 29, 1990. He plays as a left-back for the club Sparta Rotterdam.

Patrick started his football journey at Chelsea. He spent time on loan at five other clubs to gain experience. In 2014, he joined Sunderland. Later, in January 2017, he moved to Crystal Palace.

He played for the Netherlands at many youth levels. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2013. He also played for the national team in the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

Starting at Chelsea

Patrick van Aanholt joined Chelsea's youth team in 2007. He made his first professional appearance while on loan at Coventry City. This happened on August 9, 2009, in a 2–1 win against Ipswich Town. He was called back to Chelsea in December because many players left for the African Nations Cup.

Patrick was first chosen for Chelsea in an FA Cup match in 2010. He made his official Chelsea debut on March 24, 2010. This was in a 5–0 away win against Portsmouth. He came on as a substitute in the second half. A few days later, on March 27, 2010, he played his first home game for Chelsea. This was against Aston Villa in a big 7–1 victory.

In January 2010, Patrick joined Newcastle United on a short loan. He helped cover for an injured player. He played his last game for Newcastle in a 2–1 away win at Watford.

Patrick scored his first goal in his career on September 22, 2010. This was in a League Cup match where Chelsea lost 4–3 to Newcastle. On January 26, 2011, he went on loan to Leicester City. He scored his first league goal in a 4–0 win against Burnley on April 9, 2011.

On August 31, 2011, Patrick signed with Wigan Athletic for a season-long loan. However, this loan ended early. He played only a few matches for Wigan.

Loan Spells at Vitesse

On January 15, 2012, Patrick joined the Dutch club Vitesse on loan. He stayed there until the end of the season. He rejoined Vitesse for the 2012–13 season on another loan deal. This loan was extended again for the 2013–14 season.

He played his first game of the 2013–14 season in a UEFA Europa League match. On December 7, 2013, Patrick scored a goal for Vitesse. This was in a big 6–2 away win against PSV. This win helped Vitesse stay at the top of the Eredivisie league table.

Playing for Sunderland

On July 25, 2014, Patrick left Chelsea and joined Sunderland. He signed a four-year contract. He played his first game for Sunderland on August 16, 2014. This was in a 2–2 draw against West Bromwich Albion. He helped set up a goal in that match.

On November 3, he helped set up another goal in a 3–1 win against Crystal Palace. However, he got a shoulder injury in that game. Patrick scored his first goal for Sunderland on January 4, 2015. It was the only goal in an FA Cup win against Leeds United.

Sunderland's 2015–16 Season

On November 28, 2015, Patrick scored the first goal in a 2–0 home win against Stoke City. He scored again on January 16, 2016, giving Sunderland the lead against Tottenham Hotspur. His third goal of the season came on January 23, 2016. This was an equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Bournemouth.

He scored his fourth goal of the season with a free-kick. This was in a 3–0 win against Everton. This important win meant Sunderland stayed in the Premier League. It also meant that local rivals Newcastle United were relegated. On June 8, 2016, Patrick signed a new four-year deal with Sunderland.

Sunderland's 2016–17 Season

On August 13, 2016, in the first game of the season, Patrick gave away an early penalty. Sunderland lost 2–1 to Manchester City. He scored his first goal of the 2016–17 season on August 21, 2016. This was in a 2–1 loss to Middlesbrough.

On October 1, he came on as a substitute and scored a late goal. This led to a 1–1 draw at home to West Brom. Patrick scored his third goal of the season on December 17. This gave Sunderland a 1–0 home win against Watford.

Moving to Crystal Palace

On January 30, 2017, Patrick moved to Crystal Palace. He signed a four-and-a-half-year deal. He joined his former Sunderland manager, Sam Allardyce, there. Patrick played his first game for Palace on January 31 in a 2–0 win against Bournemouth. His first home game was a 4–0 loss to his old club Sunderland.

On February 25, 2017, Patrick scored his first goal for Crystal Palace. This was in a 1–0 win against Middlesbrough.

On August 24, 2019, Patrick scored a winning goal in the last minute against Manchester United. Crystal Palace won the away game 2–1. He was the first away player to score a last-minute winning goal at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

On July 16, 2020, Patrick got a dislocated shoulder injury. This happened while playing against Manchester United. He left Crystal Palace when his contract ended in 2021.

Playing for Galatasaray

On July 28, 2021, Galatasaray announced that they had signed Patrick van Aanholt. He joined them on a three-year deal.

Loan to PSV

On February 1, 2023, Patrick was loaned to the Eredivisie team PSV. He stayed there until the end of the 2022–23 season. His loan was extended for another year, lasting until June 2024.

On November 19, 2013, Patrick van Aanholt played his first senior game for the Netherlands. This was in a friendly match against Colombia. He came on as a substitute in a 0–0 draw.

In September 2017, Patrick was called up to the Curaçao national football team. This was for a friendly game against Qatar. However, he did not play in that match. Since all his games for the Netherlands were friendly matches, he was still allowed to play for Curaçao.

He was part of Ronald Koeman's first starting team for the Netherlands. This was when they played against England on March 23, 2018, in a friendly game.
