Patrick John Miguel van Aanholt (born on August 29, 1990) is a professional footballer from the Netherlands. He plays as a left-back for the Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam.
Patrick started his career at Chelsea, but he spent a lot of time on loan at other clubs. In 2014, he joined Sunderland. Later, in 2017, he moved to Crystal Palace.
He played for the Netherlands national team at different youth levels. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2013. He also played for his country in the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

Patrick's Early Life and Family
Patrick van Aanholt was born in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. His parents are from Curaçao. He is also the cousin of another Dutch international footballer, Leroy Fer.
Patrick's Club Football Journey

Starting at Chelsea
Patrick van Aanholt joined Chelsea's youth team in 2007. He made his first professional appearance while on loan at Coventry City in August 2009. This was a 2–1 win against Ipswich Town.
Chelsea called him back in December 2009. He made his debut for Chelsea on March 24, 2010, in a big 5–0 win against Portsmouth. He came on as a substitute in that game. A few days later, he played his first home game for Chelsea against Aston Villa.
In January 2010, Patrick went on a one-month loan to Newcastle United. He helped cover for an injured player there. He played his last game for Newcastle in a 2–1 win at Watford.
First Goal and More Loans
Patrick scored his first goal in his career on September 22, 2010. It was in a League Cup match against his former loan club, Newcastle. Chelsea lost that game 4–3.
In January 2011, he joined Leicester City on loan. He scored his first league goal in a 4–0 victory over Burnley in April 2011.
Later, in August 2011, Patrick signed a season-long loan deal with Wigan Athletic. However, this loan ended early by agreement. He played only a few games for Wigan.
Playing for Vitesse (on loan)
In January 2012, Patrick went on loan to the Dutch club Vitesse. He joined other Chelsea players there. He rejoined Vitesse for the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons too.
He played many games for Vitesse. On December 7, 2013, Patrick scored a goal for Vitesse in a big 6–2 win against PSV. This win helped Vitesse stay at the top of the Eredivisie league table.
Playing for Sunderland

2014–2015 Season
On July 25, 2014, Patrick left Chelsea and signed a four-year contract with Sunderland. He made his first game for Sunderland on August 16, 2014. He helped his team get a 2–2 draw against West Bromwich Albion.
Patrick scored his first goal for Sunderland on January 4, 2015. It was the only goal in an FA Cup win against Leeds United.
2015–2016 Season
On November 28, 2015, Patrick scored the first goal in a 2–0 win against Stoke City. He scored his second goal of the season in January 2016 against Tottenham Hotspur. His third goal came a week later in a 1–1 draw against Bournemouth.
He scored his fourth goal of the season with a free-kick in a 3–0 win against Everton. This important win helped Sunderland stay in the Premier League. It also meant that their local rivals, Newcastle United, were relegated. In June 2016, Patrick signed a new four-year deal with Sunderland.
2016–2017 Season
On August 13, 2016, Patrick gave away an early penalty in the first game of the season. Sunderland lost 2–1 to Manchester City. He scored his first goal of the season on August 21, 2016, against Middlesbrough.
On October 1, he scored a late goal to make it a 1–1 draw against West Brom. Patrick scored his third goal of the season on December 17. This goal gave Sunderland a 1–0 home win against Watford.
Moving to Crystal Palace

On January 30, 2017, Patrick moved to Crystal Palace. He signed a four-and-a-half-year deal. He joined his former Sunderland manager, Sam Allardyce, there.
Patrick made his first appearance for Crystal Palace on January 31, 2017. He scored his first goal for Crystal Palace on February 25, 2017. It was in a 1–0 win against Middlesbrough.
On August 24, 2019, Patrick scored a winning goal in the last minute against Manchester United. Crystal Palace won that away game 2–1. He was the first away player to score a last-minute winner at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
In July 2020, Patrick got a dislocated shoulder injury during a game against Manchester United. This injury kept him out of action for a few months.
Playing for Galatasaray
On July 28, 2021, Patrick joined Galatasaray in Turkey. He signed a three-year deal with them.
Loan to PSV
On February 1, 2023, Patrick was loaned to the Dutch club PSV. He played for them until the end of the 2022–23 season.
Patrick's International Career
On November 19, 2013, Patrick played his first game for the senior Netherlands team. It was a friendly match against Colombia. The game ended in a 0–0 draw.
In September 2017, Patrick was called up to the Curaçao national football team. This was for a friendly game against Qatar. However, he did not play in that match. Since all his games for the Netherlands were friendly matches, he could still choose to play for Curaçao.
He was part of the starting team for the Netherlands when they played against England on March 23, 2018.
