The Johan Cruyff Shield is a special football trophy in the Netherlands. It is named after the famous Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff. People often call it the Dutch Super Cup.
Only one match is played to decide the winner. This match is between the team that won the national football league, called the Eredivisie, and the team that won the national cup, the KNVB Cup. If one team wins both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup, then they play against the team that finished second in the Eredivisie.

The Trophy
The trophy itself is a large silver plate. It is about 60 centimeters wide. It looks similar to the trophies given to the Eredivisie champions.
The trophy has text engraved on it:
- The top border says: "Johan Cruijff Schaal PSV" (or the name of the winning team).
- The middle shows: "KNVB" (which stands for "Royal Dutch Football Association") and the date of the match.
- The bottom border lists: The names of the two teams that played in the match. The league champion's name is usually listed second.
History of the Shield
Early Days: The Super Cup
The very first Super Cup match was played a long time ago, on June 25, 1949. In that game, the league champions SVV beat the cup winners Quick 1888 with a score of 2–0.
The Dutch Football Association brought the competition back in 1991. It was first called the PTT Telecom Cup. These matches were always played at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam. After three years, the sponsor left, and the competition went back to being called the Super Cup.
Becoming the Johan Cruyff Shield
In 1996, the competition changed its name to the Johan Cruyff Schaal. This is Dutch for Johan Cruyff Shield. The match also moved to the Amsterdam Arena.
In 2003, some fans were not happy with how things were organized. Because of this, not many people came to watch the match between FC Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven. Only 700 tickets were sold out of 13,000 available. The winning team received €135,000 that year.
The 2004 match was very exciting. FC Utrecht played against Ajax. Utrecht won 4–2, even though they were losing 1–2 until the last few minutes. About 33,000 fans watched this amazing comeback.
In 2005, PSV won both the league and the cup. So, Ajax, who finished second in the league, played against them. Ajax won that match 2–1.
Since 2017, the Johan Cruyff Shield match is played at the home stadium of the Eredivisie champions.
