Early Career and Ajax Success
Ronald de Boer started playing football at a young age. His first youth club was De Zouaven. In 1983, he joined the famous Ajax youth program. He played for Ajax from 1988 to 1991. During this time, his team won the Eredivisie title in the 1989–90 season.
After two seasons with Twente (1991–1993), Ronald returned to Ajax. This was his most successful period as a player. He helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title three times in a row. These wins were in the 1993–94, 1994–95, and 1995–96 seasons.
He also won the UEFA Champions League in 1995. This is a very important European club competition. Ajax also won the 1995 Intercontinental Cup and the 1995 UEFA Super Cup that year. In 1996, Ajax reached the Champions League final again. However, they lost to Juventus in a penalty shootout. Ronald won another Eredivisie title with Ajax in 1997–98. He also won the 1997–98 KNVB Cup, which is the Dutch national cup.
Moving to Barcelona and Rangers
In 1999, Ronald and his brother Frank had a disagreement with Ajax. They had signed a long contract, but they wanted to leave. This led to some problems for the club. In January 1999, both brothers moved to Barcelona in Spain. They joined their former Ajax manager, Louis van Gaal, there.
While at Barcelona, Ronald played in 33 league games. He scored only one goal in the Spanish league. In the 2000–01 season, he decided to move to Rangers in Scotland. Many other Dutch players were already at Rangers.
In his first season at Rangers, the team did not win any trophies. But in the 2001–02 season, Rangers won the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup. Ronald missed the League Cup final due to an injury. The next season, 2002–03, was even better. Ronald helped Rangers win three trophies: the league, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup. He spent four seasons with Rangers.
Playing in Qatar and Retirement
After the 2003–04 season, Ronald de Boer moved to Al-Rayyan in Qatar. He played there for one season. Then, he joined Al-Shamal in 2005. At both Qatari clubs, he played alongside his twin brother Frank again. They had been teammates at Ajax, Barcelona, and Rangers.
Ronald had surgery for a neck injury. On 19 March 2008, he ended his contract with Al-Shamal. He then announced his retirement from playing professional football.
Playing for the Netherlands
Ronald de Boer played 67 games for the Dutch national team. He scored 13 goals for his country. Playing for your country is called earning a "cap."
World Cups and European Championships
He played for the Netherlands in two World Cups: in 1994 and 1998. In the 1998 World Cup, he played in six matches and scored two goals. In the semi-finals of that tournament, the Netherlands played against Brazil. The game went to a penalty shootout, and Ronald missed his penalty kick. He also played in the European Championships in 1996 and 2000.
His Role on the Team
For the Dutch national team, Ronald de Boer played in different positions. Sometimes he was a right-half, sometimes a centre forward, and sometimes an attacking midfielder. When he started at Ajax, he played as a centre forward or attacking midfielder. Later in his career, he often played on the right side of the midfield.
Ronald was never officially the captain of the Dutch national team or Ajax. However, he sometimes wore the captain's armband when the main captain was not playing. Often, the main captain was his brother Frank, with whom he played for most of his career.
After Playing Football
After retiring as a player, Ronald de Boer became an assistant manager. He currently works with the Ajax A1 youth team.
Media Appearances
Ronald de Boer was featured in the EA Sports' FIFA video game series. He was on the cover of the international edition of FIFA 96, along with Jason McAteer.
