Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Football

Wilfred Bouma was born in Helmond, Netherlands. He began his football journey at a local amateur club called SV Rood-Wit '62. In 1994, he joined PSV as a youth player. He made his first professional appearance for PSV in October 1994.

After not playing much for PSV, he was loaned out to MVV in 1996. This meant he played for MVV for a while to gain experience. He scored seven goals in 18 games there. The next season, he scored 16 goals and helped MVV get promoted to the top league, the Eredivisie. After a good season at Fortuna Sittard in 1998–99, he returned to PSV.

Playing for PSV

When Bouma first returned to PSV, he played as a left winger or forward. He was very fast and good at passing. Later, he moved to play as a left-back. He even played as a central defender for PSV in the 2004–05 season. During his time at PSV, he helped the team win many titles.

Time at Aston Villa

In August 2005, Bouma joined Aston Villa in England. His first season was tough because of injuries. However, under the new coach, Martin O'Neill, Bouma became a key player. He was the first-choice left-back during the 2006–07 season. This good form also helped him get back into the Dutch national team.

On 9 February 2008, Bouma scored his only goal for Aston Villa. It was against Newcastle United and helped his team win 4–1.

In July 2008, Bouma suffered a very serious ankle injury during a game. This injury kept him out of action for a very long time. Fans at Villa Park showed him great support as he was carried off the field. He signed a new contract in September 2008, showing the club's faith in him.

Bouma worked hard to recover, but he faced many setbacks. He had surgery and continued to have problems with his ankle. After 18 months, he finally returned to full training in January 2010. However, he never played for the first team again. In May 2010, Aston Villa announced that Bouma would leave the club. He was very emotional saying goodbye to the fans.

Coming Back to PSV

On 26 June 2010, Bouma returned to his former club, PSV Eindhoven. He signed a two-year contract in August 2010. This was a chance for him to restart his career after his injury. He scored his first goal since returning in a 3–0 win against VVV-Venlo. He also played in a record-breaking 10–0 victory over Feyenoord.

Bouma continued to play well and even wore the captain's armband for PSV in a UEFA Europa League match in February 2011. He played for PSV until 2013.
