Steven Bergwijn's Football Journey
Steven Bergwijn was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His parents are from Suriname. He started playing football at a young age.
Starting Out at PSV

Steven began his football training at the Ajax youth academy. He was there until 2011. After a disagreement with a coach, he decided to leave. Soon after, PSV signed him.
He made his first team debut for Jong PSV on 9 August 2014. This was in the second division. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win.
Steven helped PSV win the 2017–18 Eredivisie title. He scored a goal as PSV beat Ajax 3–0 to secure the championship.
Playing for Tottenham Hotspur
In January 2020, Steven Bergwijn moved to England. He signed a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur. The deal was reportedly worth around £26.7 million.
He scored in his very first Premier League game for the club. This was a 2–0 victory against Manchester City. He was even named "Man of the Match" for his great performance.
In March 2020, Steven hurt his left ankle. This injury could have kept him out for the rest of the season. However, the Premier League took a break because of COVID-19. This gave him time to get better. He returned to play and scored against Manchester United in Tottenham's first game after the break.
On 19 January 2022, Steven scored two goals against Leicester City. He scored both goals in injury time. This helped Spurs win the game 3–2 in an exciting finish.
Back to the Netherlands with Ajax
On 8 July 2022, Steven returned to his home country. He signed a five-year contract with Ajax. The transfer fee was €31.25 million. This made him the most expensive player ever bought by an Eredivisie club. He broke the record set by Sébastien Haller in 2021.
On 14 August 2022, he scored three goals in one game. Ajax won 6–1 against Groningen. On 8 August 2023, Ajax announced Steven as their new captain. He took over from Dušan Tadić.
Moving to Al-Ittihad
On 2 September 2024, Steven Bergwijn signed a three-year contract. He joined the club Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.
Playing for His Country
Steven Bergwijn first joined the Netherlands squad in October 2018. This was when Ronald Koeman was the coach.
He played his first game for the national team on 13 October 2018. It was a 3–0 win against Germany in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League A.
On 29 May 2024, Steven was chosen to be part of the Netherlands' team for UEFA Euro 2024.
However, on 3 September 2024, Ronald Koeman made a decision. He said Steven would not be called up for the national team anymore. The coach felt Steven's move to Saudi Arabia showed a "lack of sporting ambition."
