Sergiño Gianni Dest (born November 3, 2000) is a professional soccer player. He plays as a full-back for the Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven and the United States national team.

Sergiño started his career with Jong Ajax and later joined the main Ajax team in 2019. He was named "Ajax Talent of the Year" in 2020. In October 2020, he moved to Barcelona, where he won the Copa del Rey in 2021. He also played on loan for AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven. He joined PSV permanently in June 2024 and helped them win the 2023–24 Eredivisie title.

Born in the Netherlands, Sergiño Dest chose to play for the United States. He has won the CONCACAF Nations League three times with the U.S. team. He also received the "U.S. Young Soccer Player of the Year" award in 2019.

Early Life and Soccer Start

Sergiño Dest was born in the Netherlands. His father is Surinamese-American, and his mother is Dutch. He began playing soccer at a young age.

He joined the youth academy of Almere City in 2009. In 2012, he moved to the famous Ajax youth academy. Sergiño started as a forward, which is an attacking player. Over time, he changed his position to a full-back, which is a defensive role.

Club Career Highlights

Playing for Ajax

Sergiño Dest made his first professional appearance for Jong Ajax on October 15, 2018. This is Ajax's reserve team. He played well during the 2018–19 season. He appeared in 18 games and scored one goal. He also played in the 2018–19 UEFA Youth League, scoring one goal there too.

On July 27, 2019, Sergiño played his first official game for the main Ajax first team. This was in the 2019 Johan Cruyff Shield against PSV Eindhoven. Ajax won the match 2–0 and lifted the trophy. He made his Eredivisie debut in August 2019. In September, he officially became a full member of the Ajax first team. He also played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. He finished his first season with 35 appearances and two goals.

Time at Barcelona

On October 1, 2020, Sergiño Dest moved to Barcelona. This was a big step in his career. He signed a five-year contract with the Spanish club. He made his debut for Barcelona on October 4, 2020. He became the first American player to play for Barcelona in La Liga, Spain's top league.

On October 20, he also became the first American to play for Barcelona in a UEFA Champions League match. Later that month, he made history again. He was the first American to play in El Clásico, the famous match against Real Madrid. On November 25, 2020, Sergiño scored his first goal for Barcelona. This made him the first American to score a professional goal for the club. In March 2021, he scored two goals in one game against Real Sociedad.

Loan to AC Milan

On September 1, 2022, Sergiño Dest joined Serie A club AC Milan. He moved there on a one-year loan deal. He made his debut in Italy's top league, Serie A, on September 17.

Joining PSV

On August 21, 2023, Sergiño Dest moved to Eredivisie club PSV on loan. He played a key role in their season. In April 2024, he got an ACL injury, which ended his season early. However, PSV went on to win the 2023–24 Eredivisie title. In June 2024, he made his move to PSV permanent.

International Career for the United States

Sergiño Dest has dual nationality, meaning he could play for either the United States or the Netherlands. He chose to play for the United States. He played for the U.S. youth teams first. He played five games for the Under-17 team. This included four games at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He also played for the Under-20 team at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Sergiño made his debut for the senior United States team on September 6, 2019. He officially committed to playing for the U.S. team on October 28, 2019.

He was part of the U.S. team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. During the tournament, he helped set up the winning goal against Iran. This win sent the United States into the next round of the competition. In the following game against the Netherlands, the U.S. team lost 3–1.

In November 2023, during a 2023–24 CONCACAF Nations League match, Sergiño was sent off. He missed the 2024 Copa América because of his ACL injury.
