Defender (football) facts for kids
A defender in football is a player who helps protect their team's goal. They mostly play at the back of the field, trying to stop the other team from scoring. Think of them as the first line of defense in front of the goalkeeper.
There are many types of defenders, each with a special job:
- Central Defender: These players are usually in the middle of the defense. Their main job is to stop opposing attackers from getting close to the goal. They are often strong in the air and good at tackling.
- Full-Backs: These defenders play on the sides of the field, either on the left (Left Back) or the right (Right Back). They defend against wingers and also help their team attack by running down the sides of the field.
- Sweeper: This is a less common role today. A sweeper plays behind the other defenders, acting as a "last resort" to clear any balls that get past the main defensive line.
Defenders in Team Formations
Defenders are a key part of how a football team sets up on the field. When you see a formation like "4-3-3," the first number always tells you how many defenders are playing.
Here are some common formations:
- 4-3-3: This formation means there are four defenders, three midfielders, and three attackers.
- 4-4-2: This formation means there are four defenders, four midfielders, and two attackers.
- 3-4-3: This formation means there are three defenders, four midfielders, and three attackers.
