Kolbeinn Sigþórsson (born 14 March 1990) is a former professional footballer from Iceland who played as a forward. A forward is a player whose main job is to score goals.
Kolbeinn started his career at a young age in Iceland. He first played for Víkingur Reykjavik and then made his first professional appearance for HK Kópavogur when he was only 16. In 2007, he moved to the Netherlands to play for AZ Alkmaar.
His great performance in the Dutch league, called the Eredivisie, led to a move to the famous club Ajax in 2011. He became an important player for Ajax. In 2015, he joined Nantes in France. Unfortunately, injuries made his time at the club difficult. After playing for clubs in Sweden, he retired from football in 2021.
Kolbeinn was also a star for the Iceland national team. He played 64 games and scored 26 goals for his country. He was a key part of the team that played in the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

Club career
Early Career in Iceland
Kolbeinn started playing football at the youth academy of Víkingur. In 2006, just before his 16th birthday, he moved to another Icelandic club, HK.
He played five league games for HK and scored one goal. His talent was noticed by big European clubs like Real Madrid and Arsenal. After having trials with Arsenal, he decided to join the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.
AZ Alkmaar
Kolbeinn joined AZ in 2007. At first, he played for the youth teams and dealt with some injuries. He finally joined the main team in 2010. He played his first professional game for AZ on 5 August 2010, in a UEFA Europa League match.
He scored his first goal for the club on 29 August 2010. On 29 January 2011, he had an amazing game where he scored five goals against VVV-Venlo, including three goals in the first half (a hat-trick).
Because he was scoring so many goals, other big clubs became interested in him. The Dutch team Ajax made an offer to buy him. After some negotiations, the clubs agreed on a deal.
Ajax
On 4 July 2011, Kolbeinn officially joined Ajax. He said it was a "dream come true" to work with famous former players like Dennis Bergkamp and Frank de Boer.
He scored his first goal for Ajax in a friendly match. On 14 August 2011, he scored his first league goal in a big 5–1 win. He continued to score goals, getting four in his first four league matches.
Unfortunately, in October 2011, Kolbeinn broke his ankle and had to miss most of the season. He returned to the team on 1 April 2012, and scored a goal in a 6–0 victory. During his time at Ajax, he also had a shoulder injury, but he helped the team win several league titles.
Nantes
On 2 July 2015, Kolbeinn signed a five-year contract with the French club Nantes. He was given the number 9 shirt. His time at Nantes was difficult because of injuries. He was also sent on a short loan to the Turkish club Galatasaray in 2016, but he did not play any games there due to injury.
He returned to Nantes and played for their reserve team in March 2018. In March 2019, Nantes announced that Kolbeinn's contract had been ended.
Later Career
On 31 March 2019, Kolbeinn joined the Swedish club AIK. He played there for two seasons.
On 27 January 2021, he moved to another Swedish club, IFK Göteborg. After one season, his contract ended, and he left the club in December 2021. This was his last professional club before he retired.
International career
Kolbeinn played for Iceland's youth teams before making his first appearance for the main Iceland national team on 21 March 2010. In his very first game, he scored a goal in a 2–0 win against the Faroe Islands.
He became an important player for Iceland. By 2013, he was sometimes the captain of the team when the main captain, Aron Gunnarsson, was not playing.
UEFA Euro 2016
Kolbeinn was a hero for Iceland during the qualifying matches for UEFA Euro 2016. He scored an important goal in a 3–0 win against Turkey. On 12 June 2015, he scored the winning goal against the Czech Republic, which helped Iceland finish at the top of their group.
He was chosen for the Iceland squad for the Euro 2016 tournament. This was a historic moment for Iceland, as it was their first major tournament.
- Goal against England: On 27 June 2016, in the round of 16, Kolbeinn scored the winning goal in a famous 2–1 victory over England. This surprising win sent Iceland to the quarter-finals.
- Goal against France: In the quarter-final match against the host country, France, Kolbeinn scored another goal. However, Iceland lost the match 5–2.
His performance at Euro 2016 made him a national hero in Iceland. His international career with the team ended in 2021.
Personal life
Kolbeinn's family is also involved in football. His older brother, Andri Sigþórsson, was also a professional footballer. His niece, Amanda Andradóttir, is also a footballer.
