Playing Career: Gabri's Journey on the Field
Playing for Clubs
Starting at Barcelona
Gabri was born in Sallent de Llobregat, a town in Catalonia, Spain. He began his professional football journey at FC Barcelona's reserve team, FC Barcelona Atlètic. He first played for them in the 1997–98 season. His team was in the Segunda División B, which is a lower division. He scored four goals in 28 games, helping his team get promoted.
In the 1999–2000 season, Gabri joined Barcelona's main team. His first game was on August 8 in the Supercopa de España. He came on as a substitute in a match against Valencia CF. Two weeks later, he played his first La Liga game, coming off the bench in a win against Real Zaragoza.
On October 27, he played a full match for the first time and scored his first goal. This was in a Champions League game against AIK Fotboll. He scored a total of six goals in his first season. This was his best scoring season ever.
For the next three years, Gabri played regularly for Barcelona. He played less in the 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons. During these years, he won his only major titles with Barcelona. These included two league titles, one Supercup, and the Champions League in 2006. In September 2004, he had a serious knee injury. This kept him out of the game for about six months.
Time with Ajax
After his contract with Barcelona ended, Gabri joined AFC Ajax in the Netherlands. He moved there for free on June 6, 2006. He quickly won his first trophy with Ajax, the Johan Cruyff Shield, in August. He also played a big part in the team that almost won the Eredivisie league title.
In May 2007, Gabri helped Ajax win the KNVB Cup. This was a cup competition decided by penalties. In August, Ajax won the Johan Cruyff Shield again. Gabri scored the only goal in that match.
Later Football Teams
After four seasons with Ajax, Gabri signed with Umm-Salal Sports Club in Qatar in May 2010. The next year, he moved to Switzerland to play for FC Sion. In July 2012, he joined another Swiss team, FC Lausanne-Sport. He played for them until 2014 before retiring as a player.
Playing for Spain: International Games
Gabri was a very important player for Spain's youth teams. He helped the Spain U20 squad win the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999. He scored three goals in that tournament. He also played for the Spanish national team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where they won a silver medal.
He made his debut for the main Spanish national team in April 2003. This was in a friendly game against Ecuador. Gabri also represented Spain at UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal. Spain did not make it past the group stage in that tournament.
Coaching Career: From Player to Manager
After retiring from playing at age 35, Gabri returned to Barcelona. He became an assistant coach for their reserve team. In July 2015, he started coaching Barcelona's youth team, called Juvenil A.
On October 24, 2017, Gabri became the manager of FC Sion in Switzerland. His first game as a senior manager was a 5–1 loss. He won only one game out of eight before leaving the club in February 2018.
In December 2018, Gabri signed with FC Andorra. His former Barcelona teammate, Albert Jorquera, became his assistant. They helped FC Andorra win their league, the Primera Catalana, in his first season. They even got a double promotion to a higher league. However, he was let go in February 2020 after a series of losses.
Gabri continued coaching in the Spanish lower divisions. He managed UE Olot for a few months in 2021. Then, he signed with Lleida Esportiu in June 2021. He stayed there for one year. In July 2022, he became the manager of CE Sabadell FC. He left Sabadell in December 2022.
In June 2023, Gabri was appointed manager of Nantong Zhiyun F.C. in the Chinese Super League. He resigned in September and then signed with Guangxi Pingguo Haliao F.C. in China's second division.
