History of Lleida Club de Futbol
In May 2011, the old football club from Lleida, called UE Lleida, had big money problems. It owed a lot of money, about €27.2 million. Because of this, the club had to close down.
A new club was quickly formed. An entrepreneur from Lleida, Sisco Pujol, bought the rights to play in the league. He created the new team, Lleida Esportiu. They started playing in the Segunda División B, which is a high level of Spanish football. The new club also took the place of the old one in the 2011–12 Copa del Rey cup. The last coach of the old club, Emili Vicente, became the first coach of the new team.
Lleida Esportiu played its first friendly game on August 6, 2011. They won 2–0 against Poblade Mafumet. Their first official match was fifteen days later. They lost 1–3 at home to Reus. In the Copa del Rey, they were knocked out in the first round.
In 2013, just two years after starting, Lleida tried to get promoted to a higher league. They played in the promotion playoffs. They tried again a year later, in 2014. Both times, they did not succeed in getting promoted. Toni Seligrat was their coach for these seasons. In 2016, they made it to the playoff final. However, they lost to Sevilla Atlético after a penalty shootout.
In the 2017–18 Copa del Rey cup, Lleida had a great run. They reached the round of 16 for the first time ever. They even beat a top team, Real Sociedad. They came back from being three goals behind to win that match. In the round of 16, they played against Atlético Madrid. They were eliminated after losing 7–0 over two games.
In 2021, the league system changed. Lleida ended up in the new fourth-tier league, Segunda Federación. In 2022, they played in the playoffs again after six years. They lost to Sestao River Club after a 0–0 draw.
In April 2024, the club changed its name. To avoid legal problems, Lleida Esportiu became Lleida Club de Futbol.
