Peter's Role as a Leader
In 1309, Peter received control over the towns of Nocera and Isernia. He also traded the town of Montescaglioso for Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia.
Peter began to work for his brother, King Robert. King Robert was fighting against a group called the Ghibellines in Tuscany. The Ghibellines were led by Uguccione della Faggiuola.
Peter's Important Titles
Peter led 300 knights, who were skilled horsemen and soldiers. He was given many important titles, showing his power and responsibility. These titles included:
- "Vicar of Tuscany, Lombardy, Romagna, the city of Bertinoro, and the city of Ferrara"
- "Captain-General of the Guelph party of Tuscany"
The Guelphs and Ghibellines were two main groups in Italy during this time. They often fought each other. The Guelphs supported the Pope, while the Ghibellines supported the Holy Roman Emperor. Peter was a leader for the Guelph side.
Campaigns and Battles
Peter celebrated a special religious event called a jubilee in the city of Siena. After that, he traveled to Florence. There, he stayed with the Mozzi family. The city of Florence also gave him money, about 4,000 florins, to support his work. A florin was a type of gold coin.
On September 29, 1314, Peter successfully captured the city of Arezzo. However, Uguccione, his opponent, managed to take control of Lucca. King Robert asked Peter to bring more soldiers north to help. Peter's forces had some early successes.
The Battle of Montecatini
Sadly, Peter's forces faced a major defeat at the Battle of Montecatini. In this battle, his army was beaten by Uguccione and the Ghibellines. Peter was killed during this battle. He was only 24 years old when he died.
