Music Career
Starting Out and First Big Hits
Amanda Marshall signed her first record deal in 1991. However, she and the record company decided it wasn't the right fit. In 1994, Amanda signed with Epic Records. That same year, she sang on a Neil Young tribute album. Her first album, called Amanda Marshall, came out in 1995.
This album was a huge success in Canada. Many radio stations played her songs. Six songs from the album became Top 40 hits. These included "Let It Rain", "Beautiful Goodbye", and "Dark Horse". Her most successful song was "Birmingham". It reached number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US.
Amanda's songs were also featured in movies. In 1996, "This Could Take All Night" was in the movie Tin Cup. In 1997, her song "I'll Be Okay" was in My Best Friend's Wedding. Famous singer Elton John even mentioned her on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. This helped her career a lot.
More Hit Albums
In 1999, Amanda released her next album, Tuesday's Child. It was also very popular. This album had soulful pop songs and ballads, showing off her powerful voice. Her song "Ride" was in the movie The Replacements. Another song, "Believe In You", was in an episode of Touched by an Angel. It was also in the movie Kermit's Swamp Years. Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi played guitar on her song "Why Don't You Love Me?". Amanda also wrote a song with Carole King called "Right Here All Along". She was nominated for "best songwriter" at the Juno Awards of 2000.
A Break and a Comeback
In 2001, Amanda released her third album, Everybody's Got a Story. This album had a new sound, with more R&B influence. Her songs "Everybody's Got a Story" and "Sunday Morning After" were played on Canadian radio.
Amanda then took a long break from music. This was due to some disagreements with her record company. These issues took about 12 years to resolve. During this time, she released a few "greatest hits" albums. These included Intermission: The Singles Collection (2003) and Collections (2006). Another one, The Steel Box Collection, came out in 2008.
In 2012, Amanda announced she was working on new music. She hoped to release a new album in 2013, but it didn't happen then. She later said the album was "70% done."
Finally, on March 27, 2023, Amanda announced her new album, Heavy Lifting. It was released on June 9, 2023. The main song from the album was "Rainbows in Gasoline." She also released "I Hope She Cheats" and "Dawgcatcher" as singles. Amanda went on a tour across Canada. She performed two nights at Massey Hall in Toronto.
