Key Events of 1628
New Settlements and Politics
- On March 1, King Charles I of England asked all parts of England to pay a special "ship tax." This tax was usually only for towns near the sea, but the King wanted everyone to help pay for the navy.
- On September 6, a group of people called Puritans started a new settlement named Salem. This place later became part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America.
- King Charles I also met with the English Parliament again. He agreed to something called the Petition of Right. This was a document that limited the King's power and protected the rights of the people. He did this to get money from Parliament.
- The Siege of La Rochelle ended on October 28. This was a long fight where French royal forces surrounded the city of La Rochelle. The Huguenots, who were French Protestants, were living in the city and had to surrender.
Science and Discoveries
- A very important book was published by William Harvey in 1628. In this book, he shared his amazing findings about how blood moves around inside the body. This was a huge step forward in understanding how our bodies work.
- The Collegiate School was also started in 1628. This school is still around today and is the oldest educational place in North America.

- On August 10, a large Swedish warship called the Vasa sank on its very first trip! It went down right in the harbor of Stockholm, Sweden.
