Carl E. Banks, born on August 29, 1962, is a former American professional football player. He was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Carl Banks played for the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins, and the Cleveland Browns from 1984 to 1995. Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Michigan State Spartans.
Carl Banks' Football Career
Carl Banks played high school football at Beecher High School. After high school, he played college football at Michigan State University. He was a very talented player, chosen as the third overall pick in the 1984 NFL draft. This meant he was one of the first players picked by a professional team that year.
Banks joined the New York Giants and quickly became a star. In 1987, he was selected for the Pro Bowl, which is an all-star game for the best players in the NFL. He was also named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, meaning he was one of the best players of the 1980s.
Carl Banks was a key player for the Giants when they won two Super Bowls: Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV. He was known as a strong part of their defense, nicknamed the "Big Blue Wrecking Crew." In Super Bowl XXI, he had an amazing game, making 14 tackles. After playing for the Giants, he played one year for the Washington Redskins in 1993. He then finished his career with the Cleveland Browns, playing there for two seasons before retiring in 1995.
Life After Football
After retiring from playing football, Carl Banks stayed involved with the sport. He was a part-owner of a team called the New Jersey Red Dogs in the Arena Football League. He also worked for the New York Jets as their Director of Player Development in 1997.
Today, you can hear Carl Banks talking about football on the radio. He is one of the voices on Sirius NFL Radio and WFAN. Since 2007, he has also been an analyst for the radio broadcasts of the New York Giants games.
