Gottfried John (born August 29, 1942 – died September 1, 2014) was a German actor who worked in theater, movies, and as a voice actor. He was well-known for his unique, thin look, which often led to him playing bad guys. He became famous for his role as the evil General Arkady Ourumov in the 1995 James Bond movie GoldenEye. He also played a funny Julius Caesar in the film Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar, which won him an award.

Who Was Gottfried John?
Gottfried John was a talented German actor. He worked on many projects with the famous director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Between 1975 and 1981, John appeared in nine of Fassbinder's films and TV shows. Some of these included The Marriage of Maria Braun and Berlin Alexanderplatz.
His Early Life
Gottfried John was born in Berlin, Germany, on August 29, 1942. This was during World War II. Because of the war, he and his mother had to move to East Prussia. He never met his father. Gottfried grew up with his mother and spent some time in children's homes. When he was 15, he left one of these homes and went to live with his mother in Paris.
In Paris, he made a living by drawing on the streets and working in construction. He later returned to Berlin in 1960.
His Acting Career
Gottfried John's acting career took off in the 1970s. He worked a lot with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. One of his most notable roles for Fassbinder was as Reinhold in the TV mini-series Berlin Alexanderplatz in 1980.
Famous Roles
Gottfried John became known around the world for two big roles. He played General Arkady Ourumov in the James Bond film GoldenEye. He also played the Roman leader Julius Caesar in the movie Asterix and Obelix take on Caesar. These roles showed his range as an actor, from serious villain to funny character.
His Later Life and Passing
For many years, Gottfried John lived in Kelmis, Belgium. In 2008, he moved to Utting am Ammersee, Germany, where he lived with his wife, Brigitte.
Gottfried John passed away on September 1, 2014, in Utting am Ammersee. He was 72 years old and had been battling cancer.
