Hajime Isayama's Early Life

Hajime Isayama was born in Ōyama, Japan. This area is now part of Hita. He started drawing manga and sending his work to contests while in high school. After finishing school, he studied manga design at Kyushu Designer Gakuen.

Starting His Manga Career

In 2006, Isayama entered a contest called the Magazine Grand Prix (MGP). He submitted a short version of Attack on Titan. It won the "Fine Work" award. This early version was later included with the first Blu-ray of the Attack on Titan anime. When he was 20, Isayama moved to Tokyo. He worked at an Internet café to support himself while trying to become a manga artist.

He first showed his work to Weekly Shōnen Jump. They suggested he change his style to fit their magazine. Isayama decided not to. Instead, he took his work to Weekly Shōnen Magazine at Kodansha Ltd.

In 2008, he won a Special Encouragement Award for his work Heart Break One. The next year, another work called Orz was also recognized in the same contest.

The Success of Attack on Titan

In 2009, Isayama's first series, Attack on Titan, began in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. It quickly became very popular.

Awards and Adaptations

Attack on Titan won the Best Shōnen Manga award in 2011. It was also nominated for other major awards. The series has been released in English by Kodansha USA. It has inspired many other projects. These include:

  • Five spin-off manga series

  • A popular TV anime show
  • Several visual novels and video games
  • A two-part live-action film
