Joan L. Krajewski (May 31, 1934 – August 29, 2013) was an important politician from the Democratic Party. She was a member of the Philadelphia City Council. She represented the Sixth District of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for nearly 30 years.

Her Journey in Politics

Joan Krajewski lived in Port Richmond. Her district covered a large part of Lower Northeast Philadelphia. She started her political journey as a Republican committeeperson. A committeeperson helps organize political activities in a local area.

Later, she changed to the Democratic Party. She was known for being very loyal to the people who supported her. She was also skilled at political planning. Many people described her as "tough" and "a fighter."

Serving on City Council

Joan Krajewski became a member of the Philadelphia City Council in 1980. She took over the seat after Councilman Joseph Zazyczny resigned in 1979. She served on the Council until 2012. This means she was a council member for over three decades.

The City Council is a group of elected officials. They make laws and decisions for the city. They work to improve the lives of people living there.

Before Her Election

Before she was elected to the City Council, Joan Krajewski was very active in unions. A union is a group of workers who join together. They work to protect their rights and improve their working conditions.

She was the president of Local 1660-School Board Employees. This was part of a larger union called the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ Union. She also worked for the City Department of Revenue. There, she was an investigator.

In 1978, she was also elected as the Ward Leader of the 65th Ward Democratic Executive Committee. A ward leader helps guide the political party in a specific neighborhood.

Later Years and Passing

In 2007, an artist named Aaron Krolikowski sketched a day in her life. He followed her from the City Council chamber to her office. She was interviewed by a reporter there.

Joan Krajewski passed away on August 29, 2013. She had recently been diagnosed with COPD. This is a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe.
