Rodney Earl McCray (born August 29, 1961) is a former American professional basketball player. He played as a small forward and was known for his strong defense. Rodney spent 10 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1983 to 1993. During his career, he scored over 9,000 points and grabbed over 5,000 rebounds.

College Basketball Success

Rodney McCray played college basketball at the University of Louisville. He was a very important player for the Louisville Cardinals team. In 1980, his team won the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. This is a huge achievement in college sports! His teammates included his brother, Scooter McCray, and other famous players like Darrell Griffith.

Rodney was even chosen for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. However, he could not compete because of the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. Years later, in 2007, he received a special Congressional Gold Medal. This medal honored him and other athletes who missed their chance to play in the Olympics.

Rodney McCray's NBA Journey

Rodney McCray was picked third overall in the 1983 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets. He played four seasons with the Rockets. He was known as a great defender. He earned spots on the NBA All-Defensive Team in 1987 and 1988. In 1986, he helped the Rockets reach the NBA Finals. They played against Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics, but the Rockets did not win that year.

Later, in 1988, Rodney was traded to the Sacramento Kings. He then moved to the Dallas Mavericks in 1990. He spent his final season with the Chicago Bulls. This was a great way to end his career! In 1993, he won an NBA championship ring with the Bulls. This championship was a highlight of his professional career.
