Martin Erat's Hockey Journey
Starting in the NHL
Martin Erat was chosen by the Nashville Predators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He had a great first year in the NHL during the 2001–02 season. He was part of a special line of players called the "vowel line."
His very first NHL point was a game-winning goal against the Calgary Flames on October 11, 2001. That year, he set new records for a Nashville rookie with 80 games played, 24 assists, and 33 points.
Growing as a Player
After a tougher second season, Erat improved a lot in his third year, 2003–04. He scored a career-high 16 goals and had 33 assists, for a total of 49 points. He also had a strong plus-minus rating, which shows how well a player performs when they are on the ice.
Erat got his first point in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2004. This was a big step for him in his career.
During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, when NHL games were paused, Erat played in the Czech Extraliga for HC Zlín. He was one of the top scorers in that league.
Reaching New Heights
In the 2005–06 season, Erat scored a career-high 20 goals for the Predators. He also played for the Czech national team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where his team won a bronze medal.
During the 2006–07 season, Erat became a top player for his team. He scored 57 points in 68 games. He often played on the Predators' main attacking line with Paul Kariya and David Legwand.
In 2007–08, Erat set another career high with 23 goals and reached 57 points again. After this season, he signed a long-term contract with the Predators. He scored two "hat-tricks" in his career, which means scoring three goals in one game.
Moving to Other Teams
On April 3, 2013, Erat was traded from the Predators to the Washington Capitals. He had asked for this trade.
Later, on November 25, 2013, Erat asked for another trade from the Capitals. He felt it was "time to move on."
On March 4, 2014, Erat was traded again, this time to the Phoenix Coyotes.
After playing 13 seasons and 881 games in the NHL, Erat decided to play in Europe. He signed a contract with a Russian team, Avangard Omsk, in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) on September 17, 2015.
In May 2016, he returned to the Czech Extraliga and joined HC Kometa Brno. On April 19, 2017, Erat helped his team win their first championship in 51 years! Martin Erat retired from playing hockey on May 30, 2019.
