Eleanor of England (born June 18, 1269 – died August 29, 1298) was a princess from England. She was the oldest daughter of Edward I of England, who was the King of England. Her mother was Queen Eleanor of Castile.
When Eleanor was very young, her parents were away on a long trip called a Crusade. During this time, from 1270 to 1274, Eleanor became very close to her grandmother, Eleanor of Provence. She spent a lot of time with her. Eleanor was also close to her brother, Henry, who was often sick.

A Royal Engagement That Didn't Happen
For a long time, Eleanor was promised to marry King Alfonso III of Aragon. This was a common way for royal families to make alliances. However, there was a big problem. Alfonso's parents had upset the Pope. This meant they were "under papal interdict," which was like a serious religious punishment.
The Pope was unhappy because Alfonso's family claimed the throne of Sicily. This claim went against the Pope's wishes. Even though King Alfonso kept asking Edward I to send Eleanor for the wedding, Edward refused. He would not send his daughter as long as the Pope's punishment was in place.
In 1282, King Edward said that Eleanor, who was just 13, was too young to marry. He wanted to wait two more years before sending her to Aragon. Sadly, King Alfonso died before the marriage could ever happen.
Marriage and Children
Eleanor later married Count Henry III of Bar. They got married on September 20, 1293. Together, they had two children:
- Edward I, Count of Bar: He later married a woman named Mary. She was the daughter of Robert II, Duke of Burgundy.
- Joan of Bar, Countess of Surrey: She married John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey.
Eleanor passed away in Ghent on August 29, 1298. She was only 29 years old. Eleanor was buried in Westminster Abbey in England. However, the exact spot where she rests in the Abbey is not known today.
