Robert II of Burgundy (born 1248, died March 21, 1306) was an important ruler in the Middle Ages. He was the Duke of Burgundy from 1272 until his death in 1306. He also held the title of King of Thessalonica, though this was mostly a symbolic role.
Who Was Duke Robert II?
Robert was the third son of Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy and Yolande of Dreux. He came from a powerful family known as the House of Burgundy.
Robert's Family Life
In 1279, Robert married Agnes, who was the youngest daughter of Louis IX of France, a famous French king. They had several children together:
- Hugh V, Duke of Burgundy (1282–1315)
- Blanche (1288–1348), who married Edward, Count of Savoy.
- Margaret (1290–1315), who became queen by marrying King Louis X of France.
- Joan (1293–1348), who married Philip VI of France, who later became king.
- Odo IV, Duke of Burgundy (1295–1350)
- Louis, Prince of Achaea (1297–1316), who married Matilda of Hainaut.
- Mary (1298–1336), who married Edward I, Count of Bar.
- Robert, Count of Tonnerre (1302–1334), who married Joanna.
Important Events During Robert's Rule
Duke Robert II was involved in some key political events during his time.
The Dauphiné Claim
In 1284, Robert was given control of the region called Dauphiné by Rudolf of Habsburg, who was the King of Germany. This led to two years of fighting. The conflict ended when King Philip IV of France paid Robert a large sum of money (20,000 livres tournois) to give up his claim to the Dauphiné.
Helping with Peace Treaties
Robert was also one of the French representatives who helped negotiate the 1303 Treaty of Paris. This important treaty brought an end to the Gascon War, which had lasted from 1294 to 1303.
How Robert Changed the Duchy
Robert II made a very important change to how the Duchy of Burgundy was passed down. Before him, parts of the duchy were often given to younger sons or as dowries to daughters. This meant the duchy became smaller over time.
Robert stopped this practice. He decided that the entire duchy would pass to the duke's oldest son. This system is called primogeniture. It helped keep the Duchy of Burgundy together as one strong territory for future rulers.
