Life of Agnes of France
Agnes was the youngest daughter of Louis IX of France, who was a king. Her mother was Margaret of Provence. She was part of the important House of Capet royal family. Agnes was the youngest of eleven children. Eight of her siblings lived to be adults. Since her father was the King of France, she was born a princess.
Marriage and Family
In 1279, Agnes married Robert II, Duke of Burgundy. When they got married, she became the Duchess of Burgundy. Together, they had eight children.
Regent of Burgundy
Agnes's husband, Duke Robert II, passed away in 1306. Their son, Hugh, was still too young to rule Burgundy by himself. So, Agnes stepped in to rule as a "regent." A regent is someone who governs a country when the rightful ruler is too young or unable to do so. Agnes was the regent of Burgundy until her son Hugh became an adult in 1311.
