Early Life and Marriage
Margaret was born around 1290. Her father was Robert II, Duke of Burgundy. Her mother was Agnes of France. Agnes was the youngest daughter of King Louis IX of France. This meant Margaret belonged to the House of Burgundy. This family was a branch of the important Capetian dynasty.
In 1305, Margaret married her cousin, Louis. He had become the King of Navarre after his mother, Queen Joan I, passed away. Margaret and Louis had one daughter together. Her name was Joan, and she was born in 1312.
Imprisonment and Death
In early 1314, Margaret faced a serious accusation. She was accused of being disloyal to her husband. Her sister-in-law, Isabella of France, even spoke against her. Because of this, Margaret was sent to prison. She was held at Château Gaillard along with her other sister-in-law, Blanche of Burgundy.
In November of the same year, Louis became the King of France. This meant Margaret was now the Queen of France. However, she remained in prison. King Louis did not forgive her or allow her to be crowned queen. At that time, there was no pope. This meant Louis could not officially end his marriage to Margaret.
After being treated poorly in prison, Queen Margaret became very ill. She died in 1315. Some people believe she might have been murdered.
Margaret's Daughter
Margaret's daughter, Joan, later became a powerful queen. She ruled Navarre as Joan II. There were some questions about who Joan's father was. However, King Louis officially said Joan was his daughter before he died.
In Stories and TV Shows
Margaret's story has been told in books and on screen. She is a character in two novels by Maurice Druon. These books are called Le Roi de Fer and La Reine Étranglée. They are part of Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings) series.
Margaret has also been played by actresses in TV adaptations. Muriel Baptiste played her in a 1972 French miniseries. Later, Hélène Fillières played her in the 2005 version. Margaret also appears in the TV show Knightfall. In this show, she is played by Clementine Nicholson.
